Best area to stay to visit Sleeping Bear Dunes

Planning a trip for next June (any ideas on weather that time of year?) and would like to know, should we stay in Traverse City (thinking of Bayshore or Tamarack) or Glen Arbor (Homestead).? Would like to be on or at least a view of Lake Michigan. Also would bugs be bad that time of year? Went to Pictured Rocks in June and some bugs but not too bad. Thanks for any help or suggestions on other lodging.

If you stay in TC, you will be on the Grand Traverse Bay. If you stay at The Homestead, you will be right on Lake Michigan. Your view would depend on which condos you are in. At any rate, Lake Michigan is cold in June. If swimming is important to you, I would suggest getting a hotel with a pool.

Weather is "iffy" in June. This year had a very cold June, but in 2009 and 2010 it was beautiful in mid-June. The motto is "be prepared". I have not experienced many problems with bugs in June. The crowds are much smaller then, which is nice.

The Homestead is right in the Sleeping Bear area, but driving over from Traverse City only takes about 1/2 hour. Have fun doing your research!

Thanks for the response. Swimming isn't important, so water temps won't matter. Do you have any first hand experience with any of the hotels?

Have stayed at the Homestead a few times and thought it was just "okay" but being close to Sleeping Bear makes it a plus.

Tamarack is very nice and close to Downtown TC which is nice and as mentioned the drive to Sleeping Bear is not that bad.

Grand traverse resort all though not on the water is a nice place as well.

Have a great trip, Glen Arbor and Leland are great small towns!

Thanks, I am now leaning toward two nights at the Homestead and two in Traverse City. I know they are really close to each other, but like the idea of being right by Sleeping Bear. Then move over to the Traverse City on the bay. Also want to travel up Old Mission Peninsula. Any spots there that are must sees?

On Old Mission? If you get a chance to have dinner at the Boathouse and if you are into wine Chateau Chantel has a very nice view from there tasting room and you could go up to the end of the Old Mission and visit the lighthouse.

Also if you are hiking in Sleeping bear you can also go over to Northport and hike one of the trails at Leelanau state park has a some nice outlooks to the lake.

Tamarack is very nice. We loved it there. I don't blame you at all and think you have made a good decision on your choices of lodging as well as staying two nights in each place. That way you can concentrate on visiting Leelanau Peninsula and not worry about TC and Old Mission Peninsula and surrounding areas and then vice versa. OMP is a nice leisurely drive. Visit the lighthouse park at the end of the road (get a map), there are also a couple other parks you will pass by for some nice pics of the water or a picnic lunch. Visit the Old Mission General Store. Some good cheese and some very weird things in that place-lol.

You may enjoy the Music Museum in Acme. :)

We just stayed at vthe Bayside resort and were very happy with it. Room was big with enough lighting and very good beds. Big bathroom and a very good breakfast included. We had a balcony room right at the beach on the groundfloor (there's a level below with direct beachaccess also.) Recommended.
