Red lodge-yellowstone

In late june we are flying in to cody (Wyoming) and going to be spending 3 days before flying out of billings (montana) , flights are booked so cannot be altered. we are thinking off staying in red lodge and using it as a base to explore Yellowstone. Do you think staying in red lodge would be good for exploring Yellowstone or if not is there somewhere not to far from both of the airports that would be more convenient for Yellowstone ?.

Red Lodge and Cody both require too much driving time to the main sights in Yellowstone to use as a base.

Look for lodging INSIDE Yellowstone, using only Xantrerra www.yellowstonenationalparklodges.com

Alternately, use West Yellowstone, Gardiner or maybe Cooke City- but they all add driving times over staying in-park. Depending on arrival and departure times, you may need to spend night 1 in Cody and the night before flying out in or near Billings. DO NOT use on-line mapping programs to calculate driving times in the west on two-lane roads and even more inaccurate over the Beartooth Highway and IN the park.

Do the 3 days include the days your are flying? When are arrival and departure times?

Where to spend your nights may change depending on when your flights get in and when you have to get to airport for departure. You don't want to be driving in the park at night because of the danger of animals on roads.

Red Lodge and Cody are too far to use as a base. Only stay in Cody if your flight gets in to late to get to lodging before dark. Both add about 2 hour or more each way if you commute.

Red Lodge only looks close on the map. The Beartooth Scenic Highway is a must-drive if you're in the area but those beautiful mountains take time to cross. Although the Park is a more direct drive from Cody, it, too, is too far away to use as a daily base.

It's already getting late to find much in the way of in-park accommodations, but you could give it a try. You will have better luck calling Xanterra than using the website, when someone cancels they often don't update the website.

I would advise staying a night in Cody to see the Buffalo Bill Center of the West (do NOT miss that!) and going to the Cody Night Rodeo, then driving into the Park via the West Entrance the next day. If you are unable to accommodations in the Park, see the sights along the east side of the Grand Loop road, then go out through the Lamar Valley. Get a room for a night or two at Cooke City/Silvergate which is just outside the NE entrance. This would be a much better base for your stay.

On the last day, drive over the Beartooth Pass and visit Red Lodge. You could fly out of Billings that day or stay over in Red Lodge and leave the next, depending on when your flight leaves. It's an hour and 30 min to the Billings airport from Red Lodge.

Sorry, I meant you should enter the park through the EAST entrance near Cody, not West!
