Visit in early June

Hi. We're touring from Vegas to Sonoma and our route has us spending time on the Lincoln Hwy. We're trying to choose whether to stay in Carson City or SLT for a couple of days. Not interested in gambling but we're wondering if there is any other attraction available in June that would sway us to stay in one area vs. the other.

June is a great time of year at either location. If you have never been to Lake Tahoe and have the opportunity to stay up at the lake, by all means go for it. The only attraction that is closer to Carson than Tahoe is Virginia City. Virginia City is a lot of fun to visit and I highly recommend it. That being said, you can still make a side trip to Virginia City from Tahoe if you choose.

Also, for more detailed info on SLT, you may want to post in the California Lake Tahoe forum.

Lake Tahoe is beautiful. I guess the only advantage of staying at Carson City would be you can find cheaper lodging. Taking a Lake Tahoe boat tour is a great way to see the area. South Lake Tahoe is not all about gambling as the casinos only cover about a one block area at the stateline. There is much to see and do at Lake Tahoe.

We visit Tahoe last week of June, through July 4th every year. It's a great time to be at the lake, I wouldn't hesitate to stay somewhere with a lake view.

Check out Ferrari's Crown in King's Beach on the north shore. Well priced for lake front property. Can rent kayak's and other water activities on the beach, walk to shops and restaurants, and a Safeway down the street. Some units have kitchenettes or fireplaces.

You'll want to visit Emerald Bay, take a drive around the lake, short hikes, etc.

Our favorite hike is the Fire trail behind the old Biltmore Casino in nearby Crystal Bay. It's an easy 15 minutes from where you park your car, our 9 year old has done it every year. The view of the lake is excellent. Take Reservoir Rd, turn right on Lakeshore Ave and left on Forest Service Road until you come to the green metal gate, and park on the side of the road. Free telescopes are there.

Lake Tahoe is absolutely beautiful. A drive around the lake is a wonderful way to spend half a day. You can find all sorts of different water activities at Zephyr Cove. They also have a nice restaurant there and gift shop. South Lake Tahoe has some beautiful hiking trails as well. My favorite is the Eagle Lake trail.

I go to Vegas 2-3X per year mainly for gambling. While I did go into a couple of the Stateline Casino's while there, I did not spend more than a few minutes there. Many, many, non-gambling related things. Our four nights went by way to quickly.
