Lake Tahoe Trip August 2014

Hi - we are planning a trip for my niece's wedding in August. She is getting married near Los Gatos, CA but my family wants to fly out to Lake Tahoe for about a week prior to the wedding and then drive to Los Gatos and stay near there for 5 additional days.

Two adults, two kids ages 9 and 13.

Questions are - North or South Tahoe? Or both? Stay a few days in South and a few in North? Hotels or inns. The Fireside Inn in SLT looks interesting. The other hotel we are thinking of is the Iron Horse Lodge.

What are some great things to do out there and should we consider a day or two stay somewhere near?

Becky,

You will probably want to fly into Reno and drive over to Tahoe, and fly out of San Jose airport to return home, or wherever you get the best flights.

August is busy season in Tahoe, but you should enjoy the Fireside Inn, it looks really cute. After 50 years of visiting the Lake in summer, we decided on Incline Village on the north shore to spend our week each year in July. We love the less crowded feeling in Incline, being at the Hyatt High Sierra with 2b/2b and kitchen.

You can stay a few days there or a week if available. We like the all in one resort, 500 ft. lake front with lounge chairs and umbrella's, food and beverage service, a dock, water activities desk for kayaks and boat rental, Sierra Cloud Catamaran - 3 sails a day, Swimming pools and Spa, Lone Eagle Grill at lake, fire pits, bike rentals on property, hiking, small casino, arcade etc. Don't have to move our car for most activities.

There are restaurants across from the Hyatt Hotel, and rooms and cottages with the hotel. Lots of free parking.

It is not necessary to change locations in your week's time, since you will be driving to Los Gatos later, you may not want to pack up again.

Visit Emerald Bay, be sure and stop at Sand Harbor in Incline, for a beautiful beach day, take a boat tour, go horseback riding, a sunset sail, hiking, etc.

Hi there. Another suggestion for your Lake Tahoe stay would be to rent a cabin or townhome. Personally, I much prefer North Shore over South Shore. North Shore is a little more rustic and outdoorsy, where South Shore has the larger casino resorts. That said, the town of Truckee, plus Northstar and Squaw Valley have villages that have a lot of summertime activities. Check out VRBO.com for cabin rentals in the area.

We will be in Lake Tahoe for 2 days, in September, after a family reunion in California. We want to see as much as we can, take an easy hike...not much interested in casinos, but like a good restaurant at end of day. Flying out of Reno. Any suggestions appreciated....sights, places to stay. 2 baby boomers, very mobile.

With a couple of kids, you may want to check out a cabin at Zephyr cover Lodge. It is a couple miles up the road from Stateline. It has many activities on-site for the kids. My wife and I stayed in cabin 6 for four nights on our honeymoon in 2008.
