Suggestions for intinerary, please :)

Planning a short trip from 15th October finishing in New York on 19th October and hoping you can help to narrow down our options. I realise its a bit late for leaf peeping, but would be nice to be around those areas.

Option 1) Fly in to NY and travel by train to Albany, then Boston and back along the coast. (Train is our preferred mode of transport, unless you suggest otherwise)

Option 2) Fly in to Toronto and take Maple Leaf train via Niagara Falls to NY

Option 3) Fly to Montreal and take train south to NY

This is our first time in this part of the world and really would welcome some guidance

Hello! - First option is out. There is no direct train route between Albany and Boston. The Amtrak site is confusing, but the link below shows the actual train route with the stops in order. If you go from NYC to Albany, to get to Boston by train you need to turn around and go back to NYC and from there to Boston.

Montreal is more European in feel than Toronto, but Niagara Falls is a bucket list destination for lots of people, so if it is for you, pick the Toronto route. I think you will see more upstate NY scenery on the Toronto route but both routes go through the scenic Hudson Valley.

Also, if you plan to get off the train and spend a night or two along the way, do not expect taxis to be waiting at every station or public transport to get around. It can be very rural.
