Thinking about going to Red River, NM for a couple of days! Any suggestions on how many days to stay 2,3,4/less or more, what to do? Have you been to Ouray, CO, is Red River like Ouray? Thank you travel friends

When are you planning this trip? Who is going? What kind of things do you want to do?

I've been both, and Ouray is in a much more spectacular location and closer to higher elevations. Red River is a quiet town and close to Taos.

We are going June 2 - 4th or 5th. We never been there and since it is 15 hours away, wanted something closer. We usually go further north in Colorado, Yellowstone, Montana, etc..

Early June is a beautiful time in Northern NM. Red River would be a good base to see Taos, Eagles Nest as well as southern Colorado! I have not been through Red River in a few years but we had a great day trip up there from Santa Fe. You can also do some rafting from Taos or drive to Antonito CO ride the Cumbres Toltec Train to Chama. With gas prices as they are, this may be a good option, closer to home but still fun!

Red River is found along one of New Mexico's most scenic drives...the "Enchanted Circle." Taos-Angel Fire-Eagle Nest (Eagle Nest Lake (good trout fishing)-Red River-Questa-Rio Grande Gorge-Taos

.

You are mostly on the Great Plains mixed with High Desert mesas until you reach Cimarron. From there, and throughout the Enchanted Circle, you are in mountains, pines, and higher elevations. A beautiful area!

Check out the 19th Century, St. James Hotel in Cimarron...even if just for lunch.

Angel Fire is home to the Vietnam Veterans Chapel, and should be a must stop for every American of that era.

Spend at least one overnight in Taos. There is much to see, highlighted by Taos Pueblo which appears little changed from its 16th Century visit by the Coronado Expedition. Take in the splendor of the US-64 bridge high above the Rio Grande River. Rafting is available at Pilar, just SW of Taos. Kit Carson's house and grave, the Martinez Hacienda, the St. Francis de Asis church in Rancho de Taos, and several fine galleries also points of interest. Start your visit on the central plaza and work your way out.

With a relatively short time span available for your trip, I would leave Ouray, Silverton, Durango, and Mesa Verde National Park to a future, longer visit. This area is arguably, the most beautiful in the state of Colorado, and that is saying something. The Denver & Silverton Narrow Guage RR, is a fantastic ride through deep canyons, and along narrow cliffsides with deep dropoffs to the river below. Fishing is good in many rivers and lakes in the area. You would probably need at least 8-10 days for a roundtrip, and stay from East Texas.

Enjoy your travels in New Mexico.

You will love Red River. I've been to both and I was disappointed in Ouray. Don't get me wrong. The scenery is beautiful, but the town was not what I expected. Red River is smaller, friendlier and very easy to walk around. You can do just about everything in about 3 days at Red River. I have stayed longer, but 3 or 4 is enough.
