Places to eat around Chautauqua

During the summer my husband and I like to eat at different places in our neighborhood. I will post our experiences here and our opinions for your information. If you have a question about a local place, please just ask.

I hope this will be fun.

My husband and I recently had lunch at Jacks, a simple dinner, drive-in located just down the road from Barcelona beach on the shores of Lake Erie. A short 15 min. drive from Mayville\Chautauqua area.

A very casual restaurant, we sat outside on the deck at a picnic table under colorful umbrellas. Not lakeview, but the lake is right across the street. The place was very busy, but we were waited on right away. They have a full menu, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, open everyday at 7, but on Sat. and Sun. they do close at 3pm. No achohol served.

I ordered a meatball sub, curly fries, and a soft drink. The food did take a little while,(every table was full) but our waitress stopped at our table often to let us know that we were not forgotten. Our food was good, a nice sandwich with melted cheese on top, and plenty of napkins on the table.

I went inside to use the bathroom, very clean, but small, only one room for both men and women. The restaurant inside was full also, a dinner type place, with locals and vacationers alike.

Our lunch was $16, for two of us. Not including tip. We do plan on going back.

Webbs Resort, The Captins Table, located in Mayville, New York offers fine dinning at their lakeside resort. Right across the road from Chautauqua Lake. My husband and I recently had a quiet dinner there on a Thursday evening. While it was not extremely busy, I would suggest reservations for parties larger than 2.(We had reservations).

Webbs main dinning room has a very dignified atmosphere, decorated with costly and beautiful (all for sale) antiques, an open fireplace. The servers are dressed in black and white, speaking in hushed tones, white table cloths, hand painted dishes.

My husband had the Filet Mignon (29.95) I ordered the Seafood Julienne (25.95). Both of our entrees came with a choice of the soup of the day or a salad. We both chose the salad, mixed greens, tomatoes and carrots, very fresh. Choice of a side, my husband had pasta, very good, I chose summer squash(in season), it was good, had a lot of lima beans and corn mixed, hard to tell if it was fresh. Warm rolls, that were delish also came with the salads.

Food was excellent!! Drinks were good. Not too strong, just right. Full menu, full bar, good wine list.

Our service was good, friendly staff, right from beginning to end.

I would recomend the restaurant for a special occasion, not just your everyday place to eat.

Webbs also offers a Deck menu, more casual than the main dinning area, but only seasonal. A hotel is on the grounds, as is a minni golf course, candy shop, antique and furniture shop.

Webbs is a place that anyone visiting the area should enjoy. I highly recomend it!

Red Line Drive In, a burger place, 5 minute drive from Chautauqua. A 50's style theme, burger place that has excellent burgers. Eat in or take out is avaliable. My husband recently had a 1/4 pound angus burger, topped with bacon. It was the best he has had in years. A side was included for th $9.95 price, choice of fries(6 different types, curley, steak, waffle,Etc), mashed potatoes, or a fresh fruit cup. He had the waffle fries, crispy on the outside, moist on the in. I orders the Philly steak and Cheese., with curley fries. A fresh 6 inch toasted roll, loaded with beef and just right amount of cheese. I could tell it was loaded when I picked it up, heavy for a sandwich! This was also $9.95. Worth every cent.

Service was good, young school aged severs, friendly and all smiles. Indoor and outdoor seating, or counter seating.Very clean, windows behind the counter where you can watch your food being made.

Non alchoholic drinks, soda's & milkshakes. Open Mermorial Day to Labor Day.

Thanks djad. This is a valuable service since the area doesn't get much traffic on trip advisor. We visited last fall & are returning soon. Have you tried Olive's at the Chautauqua Inn?

I haven't been to Olive's since they have moved to the Inn. They use to be up in Mayville, and I did eat there a few years ago(it was good). I have heard wonderful things about Olive's from friends. Their menu is on their web-site www.olivesrestaurant.com

Olive's is part of the "Food is Good" restaurant group. They are a bunch of restaurants around the Mayville-Chautauqua area. All of the restaurants in this group are rated very highly from the "locals" around here.

Please feel free to ask more questions, as you said things can be pretty slow on this forum.

Let me add a few more fantastic places to eat in the area.

Try Calarco's Italian restaurant on Market Street in Westfield, NY and May's Deli on South Erie Street in Mayville, NY. For a great lunch or dinner, try The Springs Restaurant across from Midway State Park or the Casino in Bemus Point for wings. Go to www.chautauquatourist.com for even more great restaurants.

The Casino in Bemus Point closes for the season, so if you plan on visiting check to be sure it is open. They do sit right on the water in Bemus Bay, and there is public docking so you can go by boat or car.Parking a car down by the Casino can be a problem durring the summer.

The food there is good, wings and bar food seem to be popular. It is a bar atmosphere, with live entertainment durring the summer. New York smoking laws prohibit smoking inside, so the bar atmosphere is mostly loud music, patrons.

Oh, and the Casino is not an actual Casino for gambling, it is just the name.
