Minnewaska State Park Preserve Or Mohonk Preserve

We are visiting the New Paltz for one day from NJ. Can anyone suggest which one we should visit, Minnewaska State Park Preserve Or Mohonk Preserve.

We shall be getting 5 plus hours, I think. Both places have nice reviews and I am not able to decide which one I should go.

Any suggestions please!

Form New Paltz it is a very short drive to Mohonk Preserve office - drive through town (299 west) continue over the bridge and follow the "Mohonk" signs.

You may also visit Mohonk Mountain House property, more than enough walking for a days visit here, just continue driving past the preserve office to the mountain house entrance -

Both are pretty and which you choose depends on your budget and what type of activities you want to do. Minnewaska is I believe $9 now for a car while it costs $21/$26 per adult (weekday vs weekend) to hike at Mohonk. Be aware that the hiking pass does not allow you access to the Mountain House - for that you need to purchase dining or one of their other packages (for reference, breakfast buffet is $45/adult and lunch costs $64/adult and add tax and a 15% admin fee).

(we personally never go to Mohonk because it's expensive when there is so much more hiking in the area that is lower cost or free)

Minnewaska, no contest!

Beautiful lakes, waterfalls and views, great hiking and much more economical.

Welcome to the area! Mohonk Preserve and Mohonk Mountain House are often confused with one another. While neighbors with a shared history, Mohonk Preserve (non-profit nature preserve) and the Mohonk Mountain House (resort hotel) are two separate places. From Mohonk Preserve, you can continue your hike onto the grounds of the Mohonk Mountain House and into the Minnewaska State Park Preserve without any additional costs.

The cost of a day pass to hike at Mohonk Preserve is $12 per person (Children 12 and under are free), as New York's largest visitor-and-member supported nature preserve, day fees and membership help protect and manage over 8,000 acres of mountain ridges, forests, fields, streams, ponds, and other unique and beautiful places.

If you'd like more information about planning a day at Mohonk Preserve, you can call 845-255-0919 or stop in at our Visitor Center and talk to a trailhead assistant. They are great at giving advice on trails and things to see in the area.

Minnewaska has the waterfalls, arguably the better lake (plus Lake Awosting if you want to hike that far), and is definitely the cheaper option. Mohonk Preserve has largely similar scenery, but usually offers a chance to watch the rock climbers, and the option of hiking to the Mountain House property. While visitors entering the grounds from the preserve aren't supposed to use the mountain house itself I don't think they really mind if you walk across the porch as part of the hike around the lake. As a practical matter you can get way with a brief look inside if going hiking doesn't mean you'll look like bums.

You could also consider the possibility of starting the day with brunch at the Mohonk Mountain House. It's more expensive than entering through the preserve, but it lets you drive right to the mountain house, allow you to go inside, and includes a very nice all you can eat meal. The reciprocity agreement lets those entering from the mountain house property to use the preserve property as well as the other way around.
