I am wondering if anyone can tell me if the water is running high and fast at the Sacandaga Campground? We plan to camp there next weekend and would like to know if it is too fast to wade in?

Right now it's not what most people would probably call high and fast, but YMMV. This won't tell you what it will do, but shows what it has been doing:

Note that gage height is based on an arbitrary datum and only offers a vague idea of how deep it might be at any particular spot. Some rivers are low at a gage height of 10' and others are high at 1 or 2' (and a few flow at negative numbers).

When there's enough water it's somewhat popular with whitewater paddlers, and there are plenty of rapids on the river, though I'm not sure what the conditions are like right around the campground. A general safety rule is that you shouldn't stand up in moving water that's more than a few inches deep, because if you lose your balance, fall over, and catch a foot between rocks the current can prevent you from getting back up. Of course that's uncommon, but somebody (I think fisherman, but may have been a tuber) drowned on a river near me a few years back in exactly that manner.

Thank you. There was a lot of rain earlier in the day we went, and the prior days, so it was quite high and fast. We didn't go in the water. Utica had flash flooding that day. We did see one group go out on tubes, but those were the only people who went in the water. It was really peaceful sleeping, and with the water rushing you couldn't hear any other campers. You would never know you weren't out there alone. It was nice!
