Christmas in Maggie Valley with kids

Looking for fun stuff to do in the area with kids ages 5, 6 and 12. We rented a cabin for Christmas week. We are already booked on the Polar Express. We were thinking of going to a Christmas tree farm, being from South Florida we've never had that experience. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Lots to do. Go to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and take a hike, tour some historic buildings and see the Elk when they come down to the open fields to graze in the late afternoons.... http://www.nps.gov/grsm/index.htm

Here's a map with some more info. on where to go to see them, and also some other things to do in the area.... www.maggievalley.org/downloads/daytrips.pdf

The Cataloochee ski area is another option if the weather stays cold... http://www.cataloochee.com/

My children have also enjoyed day trips to Cherokee when they were younger. Several things they enjoyed are closed this time of year, but the Cherokee museum and the little craft shops would still be worth a visit.... http://www.cherokeesmokies.com/

The Polar Express sounds like fun!

Have a great trip and Happy Holidays.

----Funny I've been dreaming of heading your way (further south in the Keys) for Christmas!

We like to go snow tubing at Tony's Tube World in Maggie. http://www.tubemaggievalley.com/

We've rode the Polar Express with the GSMR and loved it! Hope you enjoy it as much!

We like to get our Christmas tree at Boyd Mountain Christmas Tree Farm. They also have beautiful, rustic rental cabins on the property. http://www.boydmountain.com/

You might also consider a day trip through the park to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, TN.

Hope you have a great trip!

Thanks for your advice!! They all look like great things to do.

UNCMickey......You should definitely fulfill your dream of spending a warm Christmas in the keys. They weather is beautiful that time of year.

BradMac......Do you know how the drive to Gatlinburg is? My Mom took it years ago and is scared of the roads.

The ride is very nice, especially through the park on 441. Just go to Cherokee from maggie either on Hwy 19, or get up on Hwy 74 in Waynesville and take it west to 441, then go north through Cherokee and on to Gatlinburg. That's probably 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

At this time, I-40 between Maggie Valley and Gatlinburg is closed due to a rockslide. they say it'll be a few months cleaning it up.

Thank you! We are going in a minivan. If it happens to snow while we are there, what are our options? Will chains for the tires be suffice?

I've been in heavy snow, but never needed chains on our Tahoe. Just be careful, and smart about where you try to drive in heavy snow.

I think you'll be fine, especially if you take chains with you.
