We will be leaving NJ for OBX on a Friday am in Sept.. In order to avoid traffic in Major Cities, we are thinking of taking Rt 81 through Harrisburg, Pa, getting onto Rt 64 E., near Charlottesville, Va. Then 168/158 to OBX. we know distance wise this is longer, but looking to avoid heavy traffic along Rt 95. Any feedback is welcome, this our first visit to OBX.

Thank You,

M&M from Hackettstown, NJ

If you leave NJ early and get past DC by 10am and past Richmond by 2 and to Norfolk by 4 you won''t have much traffic to deal with. Take I664 around Norfolk to Rt 168 down to Kitty Hawk. I would not go out to 81 and back 64 to Richmond. The DC beltway traffic is heavy but not that bad.

We have Waze on our phone's now and it helped us avoid big traffic jam (AT 11 pm!) last time we drove thru DC. it detoured us to the Clara Barton Parkway, road I had never heard of, but it was smooth sailing. Anyway, waze is great app. You can also call 511 in Virginia to check on traffic. Interstate 64 between Richmond 295 and Norfolk has construction and major jams all the time. VDOT is recommending travelers take 295 to route 460 by Petersburg and take 460 to Suffolk where you can get to 168 Chesapeake expressway.

I would go RT 1 - US 113 - US 13 over the Delmarva to the CBBT, less distance, time and stress.

Toatlly agree with Lance. We switched to this route about 5 years ago and have never looked. Actually has made the ride quite enjoyable now.

If you don't have enough options yet let me give you another.

If your coming down 81 let me suggest this

In Va. take the 66 exit to the first exit, Front Royal get on 522 and follow it to 64..

once on 64 take 288 around Richmond to 95.

Take 95 to 460 at Petersburg

460 on Down to Suffolk and take 58 back to 64 on down to 168 to the Outer Banks.

Watch the Rt through Front Royal and Culpepper as it makes a few turns .
