My family will be staying in Surf City this summer. Is the beach flat and the sand firm enough to ride bikes at low tide? Thanks!
Yeah, I think it should be good. It is a bit rocky (just smooth rocks) and shelly at times, but it should be fine for bikes. I think it would be good at all but the highest tide.
Here's a YouTube video of somebody riding a bike at Surf City: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3l-ShPD483c
Edited: 6 years agoThanks so much for this!
The youtube is in 2010. I know there has been a lot of erosion in the last few years. But, still wide enough for bike riding?
I haven't been down since Hurricane Matthew, but we were down in 2016 and it was about the same at low tide.
Thanks again!
We are currently able to vacation on Topsail twice a yr and alternate between North Topsail Beach and Topsail Beach. We were at N Topsail this past March and the beach where we were at was perfect. Both N. Topsail and Topsail Beach have had beach nourishment programs occurring about two yrs ago.
You shouldn't have any issues with riding your bikes on the beach. Surf City is the most populated area of the island. The only issue I would foresee would finding an easy access to the beach ie not have to carry your bikes down a lot of steps...
Hope you have a wonderful vacation and wonderful memories.
Thank you!!!! That is helpful to know.
There is a huge difference in N topsail and surf city- lots more rocks and hard shells making the sand rough-true surf city the sand is more like a powder and soft-where the tide has gone out the ride is much easier.
Several places rent bikes and beach equipment so you dont even have to pack them. Lots of bike paths for riding on the island main road. Great place to visit and very dog friendly on leash.
Thank you so much for this info.
