Celebrating a 90th in sunny Stockport....

Hi everyone,

I realise this is a needle in a haystack job in all likelihood and a lot depends on personal tastes etc BUT...

My grandma is turning 90 next month and we said we'd go over to Stockport or Manchester for lunch/drinks on the day. Turns out it is now 4 weeks away and no one has actually organised anything. 🙈

About the only thing that has been decided is that it'll be Stockport rather than Manchester.

And here's the kicker.... It's going to be in Friday 22nd December, the very last working day before Christmas, OH JOY.

I don't live in the area and I've only ever been to Stockport city centre once and that was about 15 years ago so my knowledge is nil.

In a nutshell, does anyone have any recommendations? I'm thinking a really good pub or a nice (but not too lavish) restaurant. I'm not talking about silver service or anything posh, but a bit more upmarket than Wetherspoon. 😉

I am totally realistic in that we have left it waaaaay too late for any of this so I am expecting it to be slim pickings but it is what it is.

I would appreciate any advice and in the meantime I am going to do some research too, but I just wanted some locals' advice if poss.

Many thanks in advance! 🙏🏼

I went on a pub crawl of Stockport last year and we finished off the day in The Arden Arms.

Wow, Fri 22 Dec may be a key constraint with booking so late, especially if there are quite a number in your group.

And yes - it's all down to personal taste as well.

I can't suggest anywhere in Stockport itself, but linked below are two quite different places that I've been very pleased to eat at numerous times. And will certainly be going to them again. They are in what I would call the general Stockport area but are both about 6 miles outside centre of Stockport. They are much better than the average pub or restaurant; your grandma deserves something a bit special for such a milestone event. The first one takes a bit of finding down a narrow lane.

Would your grandma enjoy a really nice afternoon tea as opposed to lunch? There is a place called the Ash Tea Rooms, which is housed in a former Victorian pub just to the north of Stockport town centre. It's smart, but not at all pretentious, and as well as the tea room, the building contains a celebration cake business, a chocolatier, a deli, and so on, which could provide some ideas for nice foody-type presents. It's also all on one level, which may be helpful if your grandma has mobility problems. There is a big car park to the rear of the building. Don't be put off by the surrounding area, which isn't the most gracious - the Ash is well worth a visit.

Try the Puss in Boots, on Nangreave Road, in Offerton.

They do a pretty good carvery lunch as well as other options. The pub is very pleasant, friendly and welcoming.

Find reviews of them on TA, or try Facebook for more details. Here’s a link to their website.. I hope it works

You may need to book a table for lunch so close to Christmas .

Happy 90th Birthday to your Grandmother!

Thanks everyone! Some good ideas there.

We're expecting the group to be only about 6 in size, the trouble being that 3 of us are coming from out of the area by train and won't have car transport. So the suggestions that are outside the city might be out of the question (the one at Marple Bridge looks soooo lovely!) however to be honest it's down to my grandma and if she chose somewhere like that I would do it if I had to get a taxi (I'll be getting into Stockport Station from Nottingham, my parents will be going into the same station from Stoke-on-Trent, we could share a taxi).

Availability is key though, so I'm going to call my grandma shortly to discuss! 😊

Thanks again for all your help, guys.

The Spread Eagle near Hatherlow church in the Romiley/ Bredbury Green area is a really good place to go to. The Italian in Romiley is brilliant for authentic italian food, or Platform one is brilliant as well for upmarket pub food.

Tried lots of pubs with food without success for Friday 22nd December

Perhaps,

or the others might look around and arrange a minicab/minibus.

Thanks John. My grandma lives in Heaton Mersey, as it happens!

I messaged one place. They have a quiet table available from 3pm, which might actually be doable, I just need to check with people first. I haven't been able to speak to my Grandma yet, and today is really a do-or-die day. Unfortunately she's very picky and might be more inclined to say no without realising it's hard to get somewhere on that day of all days. (But it IS her 90th so she has every right to be picky!) Hopefully by the end of today we'll have something....
