First trip to Charleston - Dog-friendly accommodation/rental

Hi, I'll be in Charleston for the first time in mid-October (will need to come back to this board for more suggestions later), but first looking for advice on where we can stay with our dog. Dog-friendly hotels/inns OK, but not preferable because we will be out of the room for several hours at a wedding. Ideally, we would like to rent a condo/cottage away from downtown Charleston, where the dog can run. I'm not familiar with the area at all; any thoughts on a nice town with access to outdoor space, beaches etc? Kiawah is an option, but it seems quite big! I would prefer someplace with less resort, more low-country plantation..Thanks!

Do be aware, if you decide to rent in Mt. P. there is a leash law, and you have to pick up your dog's business immediately after s/he does it.

We just returned from IOP a couple of weeks ago and found our pet friendly rental on www.vrbo.com so I would recommend you check there. We had a nice house with a pool and privacy fenced yard. It was perfect for us and our dogs. We felt IOP was the perfect place to stay, just a few minutes from all we wanted to see & do in Charleston and the surrounding area. Mostly just beach homes and a very few little shops and restaurants so not too "touristy" at all.

From a Dec. 2010 press release:

Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s pet-friendly vacation options a huge success

KIAWAH ISLAND, SC – For the past four years, Kiawah Island Golf Resort has encouraged families to bring their dogs with them on their Kiawah Island vacation. The initiative has met with tremendous success. The resort offers numerous villa options all across the island that allow pets and, with the spacious Night Heron Park, over 30 miles of walking and biking trails as well as 10 miles of beach. Kiawah Island is a pet paradise. To add to the experience, the resort offer guests animal walkers and sitters.

“This option was added as a way for the resort to reach a growing number of people who travel with their pets,” explains Jeff Brown, Director of the resort’s Villa Reservations department. “Clearly, with the large number of people who take advantage of this option, it has struck a chord.”

There is a $25 per night fee for pets and there is no limit to the size or the number of animals guests bring.

For guests traveling in the fall, each year the Kiawah Island Community Association offers its special “Dogtoberfest,” a day dedicated to pets and their owners featuring various pet-service vendors including trainers, groomers, vets, boarding shelters and much, much more. Admission to the event is complimentary. Go to the Kiawah Island Community Association’s web site (http://www.kiawah-owners.org/) for details.

For those interested in bringing pets to Kiawah Island Golf Resort, please visit our website at www.PetsOnKiawah.com prior to departing for important island information.

Please be aware that Kiawah is 40-60 minutes away from Charleston, depending on traffic, etc. Not very convenient if you will be spending alot of time in Charleston attending wedding festivities.
