Fort Worth to New Orleans via road

I will be at a conference in July 2015 in New Orleans. We would like to fly direct from Sydney, Australia to Fort Worth, and drive to New Orleans.

From looking at map... it seems two options are to either go down and across (via Houston and Pasadena) or go across and down, via Jackson and down to New Orleans.

So, my question is.... any idea how long it would take stopping and looking around, and staying overnight as we go. Secondly, is it relatively safe doing this ? And lastly... what route would be the best, or is it better to do both one way each?

Since I am already here - I will give you my opinion.../ ask questions

Driving from FW to NOLA is about 8 hours so you really don't need to stop unless you want to. If you do want to stop then comes the question where would you rather stop. If the answer is Houston - then another question why not fly into Houston?

Good point. However, we want to drive and see the towns along the way. Happy to take a few days doing this.

I was just wondering either way was a good route to see things along, or just one. As in Australia, there is one road that really goes through nothing to get from point A to B, but the alternative way, is just picture perfect and interesting.

So, yeah we will still drive :-)

We drive this route at least once/year from Dallas. We go through Shreveport to Lafayette through Baton Rouge to New Orleans.

You can visit plantation homes - our most recent stop was Melrose in Natchitoches. Look up the town, you may want to stay there to sightsee.

We also love cemeteries. Our fave is in Convent behind the cathedral (which is lovely inside with a grotto in the back behind the alter).

Surprisingly good food at The Cabin.

Well Robin, I hope that your bankroll goes back up by next July since I was about to suggest yet another route, just before I came back and saw your last post.

I used to live in Shreveport, but it was a long time ago, so I don't know how attractive the route that Pepper penned out is nowadays.

Fort Worth - Tyler - Nacogdoches - Lufkin - Lake Sam Rayburn (overnight) - Lake Charles (possible overnight) - Baton Rouge (possible overnight) - NOLA works for me.

You get to visit some nice Texas towns, while Lake Sam Rayburn provides a retreat away from the cities.

L'Auberge Casino Resort on the SE side of Lake Charles has a nice setting that the casinos in New Orleans don't.

Or you can opt to stay in Baton Rouge (the capital of Louisiana) instead.

Vicksburg and Jackson are nice towns to visit if you're interested in the Civil War history, but I-20 is a rather boring drive.

Cheers,

John.

P.S. - I don't know if they are willing to send printed materials overseas due to postage cost, but here in the states, when I request them at the visitors bureau website of each state (on line), I would receive a package full of materials and maps of the areas I'm interested in (ie., all the towns that I mentioned) just a couple of weeks later.

Thank you John_P_H9430 for that helpful information. I am printing off these great suggestions.

I am not sure about the printed matter either, but there are lots of sites online I can use at a later stage for maps etc. Good idea though.

Will you roundtrip from DFW or drop the car in NO? If it's one way expect a big drop fee. Do you have any interest in Ft. Worth or Dallas? You can easily spend 4 days there. JFK sites in Dallas, Ft. Worth Stock Yards and Sundance Square, excellent museums in both cities.

Yes, the car will need to be dropped off in New Orleans, as we join a cruise for a 7 day conference. Will have to rent again another car for return trip. We also have hefty drop off fees too.

Our interest in fort Worth, Dallas etc..is because we have never seen it. We have both been to New Orleans and many other parts of USA, just not that region.

You might consider putting all your non-cruise time on one end or the other of the cruise and flying between DFW and NO on one leg. That would give more time for a road trip one way. In addition to places already mentioned here and on the NO forum, you might like to visit Austin and San Antonio.
