Not well known, but most camping on BLM land is free -and you will be surrounded by BLM land. This is a pretty good and simple explanation:

You do need to be prepared for primitive camping, provide your own water and carry out your trash.

When tent camping in primitive areas you not only need to provide your own water, carry out your trash, obey camp fire rules but you have to have your own loo and use it then dispose human waste accordingly to guidelines.

I saw that. I'm thinking we'd at least hope for a BLM site with vault toilets.

I haven't looked through your various threads. I assume you are going to try for a spot in Capitol Reef at the Fruits FCFS campground?

There are not a whole lot of developed campsites in the area, aside from Goblin Valley or Fruita - both of which are a fair distance apart and fill up quickly.

I camped on BLM land at Temple Mountain in June, near Goblin Valley. Take the Temple Mountain road off SR-24 (signposted Goblin Valley SP). After a few miles you'll come to a junction, instead of turning left for GV, carry straight on towards Temple Mountain. After about 60 seconds you'll come to a large gravel parking type area on your left with fire rings and vault toilets where you can camp. Or carry on a bit further (the pavement ends and the road becomes dirt shortly after the area with the toilets) and there are nicer, more secluded sites tucked away against the cliffs.

Alternatively, head towards Goblin Valley and take a right just before the park entrance, onto Wild Horse Road. There's several dirt spurs roads going off to the left from this road which lead to nice free camping spots up against the cliffs. Your nearest vault toilets here would be at the trailhead for Little Wild Horse Canyon - about 5 miles from the turnoff at the entrance to GV State Park.

hmmm. maybe we'll need to pick up some type of waste receptacle. any recommendations. we have an old porta potty but it's pretty big and we're a little tight on space in an Outback with a cartop carrier. thanks for the info on an area alternative

Deer Cr and Cedar Mesa especially, are nice campgrounds for Burr Tr. Great access for all those slots on Notom rd and even the remote southern end of Capitol Reef NP. Really like Cedar Mesa only 6-7 sites.
