Visiting Memorial Day Weekend

Hi! My boyfriend and I are coming to Charles Town/Harpers Ferry for a romantic and fun Memorial Day weekend. Neither of us have been there. We will be there for 2 full days. We’ve booked our stay at a B&B.

On the Saturday we have already schedule a zip line adventure and a white water rafting adventure in Harpers Ferry.

Our Sunday is wide open right now. We’ve noticed there are some vineyards to visit and some shops in town. Is there anything else that anyone recommends we do? We would love to do a ghost tour possible too. Any recommendations that?

What about good places to eat?

Thanks!!

Sandy

A B&B is an excellent choice.

Ghost tours in Harpers Ferry, et al.

We are also visiting Charles Town/Harpers Ferry for a romantic and fun visit.

Know that you are in the land of Civil War History

Winchester, VA; Sharpsburg, MD (Antietam); and Harpers Ferry, WV are all nearby.

Harpers Ferry, VA in 1859 was the site of John Brown’s historical raid on a federal arsenal. Robert E. Lee leading the U.S. Marines captured Brown, who was convicted of treason and hung.

In June 20, 1863, WV became a state and Harpers Ferry, VA became Harpers Ferry, WV. To this day the WV Archives and History retains documents, which question the legality of WV’s statehood (wvculture.org/history/…wvh30-1.html.)

History has recorded that many Virginia citizens west of the Appalachian Mountains had long been dissatisfied with the Richmond Government; and WV, like Tennessee, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware had many men who served the Confederate and Federal Governments.

Some historians regard the June 2, 1861 Battle at Philippi, VA to be the first Battle of the Civil War (Fort Sumter was a bombardment, rather than a battle. The Battle of First Bull Run was the first major Battle of the Civil War.)

Harpers Ferry was indefensible, and traded hands several times during the Civil War. During the Civil War, Harpers Ferry was important not because of the former arsenal, but because Harpers Ferry had vital B & O Rail lines as well as a telegraph center.

Take the time to climb to the Jefferson Rock at Harpers Ferry for astounding views of the Potomac.

Gettysburg:

We always book Association of Licensed Battlefield Guides;

The normal 2 hour tour is $60.00; and we have scheduled a 3 hour tour for $90.00.

The guide will drive your car through the Battlefield and stop at major sites for narration.

We are still looking for greater insight concerning Lee/Longstreet.

The film Gettysburg is 4 hours long and is at Netflix.

We are currently re-reading 1963 Centennial History of the Civil War (three vol) by Bruce Catton.

The American Heritage History of the Battle of Gettysburg is a must re-read.

There are several interesting restaurants in this historical area.

Choose several which interest you, and do phone this week for reservations.

If you like Mexican, check out Mi Degollado. For simple fare check out ScoopDawgs.

Like to gamble and watch horse racing (live races on Friday and Saturday evenings). Pretty decent eats available at the Skybox.

For a great view of the valley climb up to Maryland Heights.

Have fun!

Sorry, the gambling and horse racing takes place at Hollywood Casino.
