oglebay

We have never been to Oglebay before and are considering it fot a weekend getaway in the spring. Looking for information on the resort as well as the surrounding area. What is there to do? Are there recommended places to eat, other than Oglebay? which restaurant s at Oglebay do you recommend? Appreciate any info you can give. Thanks!

Oglebay Resort is great any time of year (I was just there last weekend). So much to do... three golf courses, a par 3, indoor pools, outdoor pools, mini-golf, skiing, fishing, boating, a nice little zoo, arts and crafts, great food. One of my favorite places.

Wheeling is a small city, so while Oglebay is a 5 to 10 mile drive from some of my suggestions below, it is a very easy drive. Like any other city, Wheeling has just about any chain restaurant you can think of at the Highlands or St. Clairsville Mall (Appleby's, TGIFridays, Bob Evans, Olive Garden, etc.). Wheeling is very much known for their Italian Festival, so I'll start with a few Italian restaurant suggestions, followed by American Cuisine.

Many festivals and fairs throughout the year and concerts at Wesbanco Arena (home of their minor-league pro hockey team). Always something to do in Wheeling, and Oglebay Resort is amazing. Once you do some research, please feel free to ask any specific questions you may have, and I'll do my best to answer them

If you like to try area specific pizza, check out DiCarlo's Pizza in Wheeling. They cook the pizza, then put the toppings on after it is cooked. Some people love it, some hate it. IMO, it is very tasty.

Are you into antiques at all? Each spring the resort hosts a weekend antique show that is quite good. We have done this for several years and they have a room package that also allows entrance to the show and, our favorite part, access to a huge dessert bar that takes up an entire room. The nearby Moundsville Prison also has a very unique 'escape room' that our grandkids loved!

Thanks all for some great information! I have also been researching Stonewall Resort. A colleague recommended it and it also looks like a great weekend getaway. Do you guys have any thoughts on which you prefer and why? The golf is important to my husband and both have a spa. Thanks again for your help!

Stonewall is beautiful, and well worth a trip. If you are just going for golf, spa, and dining, then either will work for you.

If you are looking for more activities, local shopping, dining, entertainment, etc. then DEFINITELY Oglebay. Stonewall Resort is isolated, and the closest "town" is Weston. Very limited dining and entertainment options in Weston. The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum is fun to visit, and there is a winery in the area. But that is about it. My recommendation is Oglebay.

Not too far is the Taj Maha of WV. http://www.palaceofgold.com/

Edit: Sorry, that was already suggested, above.
