Suggestions on Activities

While in the midst of planning next summer's road trip, we decided a two night (one full day) stopover in Wheeling would be nice before continuing the last few hours home. I have looked at suggestions on TA and have a pamphlet from Wheeling but would like some "expert" suggestions of what to do while in town. We are up for anything and love experiencing new towns. Thanks for any help.

There are plenty of fun and interesting things to do in and around Wheeling, and that changes depending on what time of year you'll be visiting. Oglebay Park is a must no matter what time of year. Oglebay has 3 golf courses (1 Arnold Palmer design), swimming, hiking, horseback riding, a zoo, a lodge, several restaurants, etc. http://www.oglebay-resort.com/ . During the Winter they host the Festival of Lights and have a ski slope.

Wheeling has a famous music theater: http://www.capitoltheatrewheeling.com/

Tours of Victorian Homes: www.wheelingcvb.com/tours-and-itineraries.php

An old Market District with antiques and the best fish sandwich you'll ever eat at Colemans: http://centremarket.org/

A large shopping district with a huge Cabela's: http://www.the-highlands.com/

And a great Italian Festival during the summer: http://www.italyfest.com/

Wheeling is home to the national Halloween museum (available to tour by appointment only): http://www.castlehalloween.com/

And the Kruger Street Toy and Train Museum: toyandtrain.com

The state of West Virginia was created by President Lincoln during the Civil War when Virginia seceded from the US. While the Capital for the state of West Virginia is now in Charleston, the first Capital was in Wheeling and they offer tours of the Independence Hall: http://www.wvculture.org/museum/WVIHmod.html

Wheeling is known for its Italian food, and here are some of the local favorites:

Bella Via: http://bellaviaitalianrestaurant.com/2013/

Figartti's: www.figarettisrestaurant.com/

Undo's: http://www.undos.com/

DeFelice Brothers: http://www.defelicebrospizza.com/

DiCarlo's: http://www.dicarlospizza.net/

If you are looking for a place for a drink and to watch sports, TJ's Sportsgarden is one of my favorites in the state. Be sure to order the French Blue Cheese dip for your fries! http://tjsportsgarden.com/

For steaks and other entre's, it's Ye Olde Alpha: http://yeoldealpha.com/

Wheeling is in the northern panhandle of West Virginia, and while you can visit the Wheeling Island Casino and racetrack http://www.wheelingisland.com/, you will also be less than an hour from the Mountaineer Casino and Racetrack which features horse racing and concerts. Both casinos offer table games. http://www.mtrgaming.com/

To the south of Wheeling is Moundsville with several attractions. The first is the actual Indian Burial Mound which the town is named for: www.wvculture.org/museum/GraveCreekmod.html

The State Penitentiary had been in Moundsville for a century, and though it is now closed to inmates, they offer special tours (both haunted and historical). Well worth a visit! http://www.wvpentours.com/

The Hare Krishna's built their Palace of Gold near Moundsville/ Wheeling and offer tours of New Vrindaban. You get much more unique than a tour of a palace of Gold! http://www.palaceofgold.com/

If that isn't enough to entertain you for weeks, you will also be near the city of Pittsburgh and all of the wonderful attractions they offer. Enjoy your visit to Wheeling, and please feel free to post any questions you may have.
