Hilo for 1 night?

We are staying at the Hilton Waikoloa for 6 nights, but will be on the big Island for 7 nights. We arrive into Hilo Airport at 5p, and thought it might be a good idea to spend one night in Hilto, and then work our way to Waikoloa Village the next day. Is this a good idea? Saw great reviews for the Shipman House. Is it worth the $220 per night or for the 1 night or are there better options. Mahalo...ML

I think its great idea to spend one night in Hilo. You could go see the lava flow that evening and then visit VNP next day before heading over to Waikoloa!

Thanks. Are you familiar with the Shipman House or any other suggestions on where to stay in Hilo?

Are you flying into Hilo from the Mainland that first night? If so, you will be quite exhausted to see the Volcano at night...which is often the reason people spend the night in Volcano. If it is a 1 night stay you will be checking right out again in the morning and driving around with your belongings in the car(Not recommended) while touring VNP. This is not an optimal sequence...because after your day of touring(Once rested) you will have to drive to Waikoloa Beach Resort(Not Village) in the dark defeating the whole purpose of overnighting on the East side. Usually people put that east side night in the middle or at the very end of the Vacation, not generally on arrival from the Mainland. However, now reading this back... it is probably inter-island as not many flights arrive ITO from the Mainland

If this is an Inter-island arrival flight into Hilo, I would suggest an earlier arrival, so as to make the most of your day.

The Shipman House is a very historic and unique building. I'm sure it would be a great experience to stay there. Plus, it's in a beautiful area (Reed's Island) and VERY close to downtown Hilo. Not knowing your schedule before you arrive Hilo you're probably best off just having dinner that evening in Hilo. Cafe Pesto in downtown Hilo would be a great choice. Good food and close to Shipman House (less than a mile away).

Wanderlust - just FYI - there are no mainland flights into Hilo. None!

Thank-you hp for that clarification. I really didn't think so....what I did mean to articulate was if the OP was coming through HNL from the Mainland that same day....given the hour... or merely an Island hop. Usually if it is the latter, passengers generally arrive a bit earlier to make the most of their day at their destination...especially if there for only one night.(Hilo side)

If you could possible stay two nights in Volcano or Hilo that would give you more time to both explore Volcano National Park and Lower Puna first day out and Hilo town, gardens, waterfalls second day out and maybe as far north as Waipio Valley overlook when heading up to Waikoloa area.

Here's a good drive guide to the island:
