Shoes for hiking Road to Hana

Hi,

Would these water shoes work for hiking some trails on The Road to Hana( Pipawai trail, seven sacred pools, twin falls, black sand beach)? If not could you please suggest some cheap lightweight shoes. I feel our athletic shoes would take more space. So looking for a different option. Thanks!!

I would check on what kind of sole these shoes have. You need something that will stand up to sharp rocks. I wore Teva's.

Right now the Pools of Oheo are closed but you can still hike the Pipiwai Trail.

Thank you very much for letting me know. Teva's is a bit more expensive. The sole looks like this if this link could be opened.

Yes, I looked at the link but it's hard to tell from it how thick or sturdy the sole is. It does say they have drainage holes in the sole. How big? I wouldn't want to be hiking a dirt trail with shoes that have holes in the bottom of them!! Rocks, twigs, limbs etc will be along the Pipiwai trail.

Keens- you really want something with good soles. We have worn our Keen sandals all over the Hawaiian islands and they are perfect because a good sole to protect your feet.. can walk right through water in them and dry fast. Your feet will thank you.

@travelbugged Price for Keens range between 80-100. Are there similar inexpensive ones. Please let me know.

You could compare the Keen's to Tevas but probably around the same price. Any good "sandal" will be costly. Look at prices of OhuKai's too. Do you have a cheap pair of tennies at home?

I bought a pair of Ecco Yucatan Sandals. Wonder if I should bring some old hiking tennis shoes instead so as not to wreck them.

I do a lot of trail walking/hiking similar to your plans and I use the water shoes at the link below. I get a new pair every year, I spend 12 weeks per year on Maui so I get plenty of use out of them. They have a good sole for protection and dry fast if they get wet. THe price cant be beat so I don't care how beat up they get.

I would not recommend these shoes for the big hikes such as Mahan Ridge or Haleakala 'from top to ocean', real hiking boots are needed for that.
