Are there "last minute" accomodations along RTH?

We'll be on Maui in mid-August and are staying at a condo in Kaanapali for 7 days.

Haleakala Nat'l Park and the Pipiwai trail are at the top of our RTH list. We enjoy hiking and don't want to feel rushed, so we'd like to spend one night in Hana to make the most of it. The plan would be to double book (keep our condo in Kaanapali, but sleep on the road to Hana one night).

In terms of planning we'd like to find out what the weather will be, and assess our jet lag situation before deciding which days to go to Hana.

Is it possible to find one-night accommodations in Hana or surrounding area a day or two before arrival? We're OK with really basic accommodations but would prefer not to camp (just because we don't want to bring all our gear on the plane). I googled but couldn't find much info about availability for last minute stays.

Not much in the way of last minute bookings. Finding one for one night is hard enough but can be done. You will find your jet lag only lasting a few days when you will greet the sunrise with the birds!!

You could look at the cabins at Waianapanapa, they're rustic and you need to take your own linens.

Love your idea of double booking a place, but I don't know that I would risk trying to find a place on the spur of the moment. Sometimes a place will have an open window, that they want to fill for one night, and they will just charge a bit more, for the one night booking.

Waianapanapa requires permits and reservations in advance.

On my visit last summer, I did what exactly you are considering. Stayed at the Hana Kai for one night. While there is a minimum 2-night stay for many of the units, some of the condos are available for one night. I stayed in unit 203 - Lanakila.

Don't bet the farm that you'll find something. You're traveling during high season.

Right now, there seems to be many rooms available at the Hana Kai in mid August.

By mid-month in August, things are dropping off here. Many schools in the mainland start earlier, and many people want to get back home and have some time to settle back in, too.

Reau's idea is an excellent one. Hana Kai is very nice.

Thanks all. Looks like we'll have to settle on a date and book in advance.... Hana Kai looks nice but not sure it's in our price range (esp with the double booking)... still, might just splurge...

Make sure you check the cancellation policy. What about storms and road issues, for example?

At least with double booking a place, if for some reason the road is closed, or impassable, you still have a place in Ka'anapali.
