Hana to Airport for a 9:10 a.m. Flight?

We are going from Hana to Hilo/Volcano and didn't realize there are not many direct flights. There is one at 9:10 a.m. but am worried that leaving at 6 a.m. from Hana to the airport might be too dark, difficult, etc. Has anyone tried this before or have thoughts on whether this is a crazy idea?

Thanks!

Thinking more about this, probably need to leave before 6 a.m. which may make it even tougher

It is something I wouldn't want to do. What time of year are you going to be doing this? Is it soon? Or in January, when there is a good chance of lots of rain. With the heavy rains comes downed trees, flash floods, and just miserable driving conditions on that road.

And yes, I would want to leave before 6. You still need to refill the rental car and return it. I would think that TSA might be quicker then though.

What time is the next flight to Hilo?

Yes, it's a crazy idea. As in, please don't do it.

You would need to leave Hana by 4 AM. That would get you to Kahului by around 7, assuming no delays or problems. You would still be cutting it close, to gas and return the rental car-then get through TSA.

I don't recommend being in the Hana area on departure day. There are so many things that could go wrong. Will those things happen? No way to tell, just possibilities!!

You should give yourself at least an hour's cushion on top of the 2 1/2-3 hrs of driving time and you will be driving in the dark!!

Remember too that a connecting flight in HNL really isn't a big deal. You may not even get off the plane-or if you do, your flight to Hilo will be at a gate "next door".

You usually can't check into any place until afternoon. Flying into Hilo early will mean you could be "stranded" with luggage and all for hours. You *could* visit VNP with luggage in the car but you are still risking theft.

Consistent feedback....won't argue with it! The next direct flight isn't until mid-afternoon, so lose a whole day on the BI. I will just do a connecting flight as Nick says. Thanks everyone for your feedback.

You're welcome. You really need to allow 3 full hours drive time from Hana. The road is under work/construction all year round, and of course, is subject to closures and longer delays when trees decide pavement looks good (three times in the last 8-9 days).

In the winter, landslides *can* be more frequent, but they happen all year round. Some of the worst recently were last fall and this spring.

They are also working on the highway at lower points, near Haiku and Paia-though that *should * be long done by January.
