Haleakala sunrise bike ride

We want to do the Haleakala sunrise and bike ride. We will be on Royal Caribbean Cruise ship. We were wondering what hours the ships tender work ?

Don't do the bike rise. Not a good idea. Loads of groggy and jet lagged tourists driving in unfamiliar rental cars on a winding mountain road with lot of inexperienced, out of shape bikers who haven't ridden in years, all clumped together, on a road, often with no shoulder or railings.

Sunrise on the other hand is fine, but will you drive yourselves or take a tour? Reservations are required nowadays in addition to the usual entry fee.

BTW, saying that you are on a Royal Caribbean Cruise ship doesn't help. We don't know which cruise you're on and they have a few that stop in Maui. Some are an overnight stay, others are just for the day.

Arranging a middle of the night tender to make the sunrise in time (so you reach the summit before sunrise) would have to be between you and Royal Caribbean.

Def skip the bike tour. Especially since you are on a cruise. If something happens, you are really out of luck.

We are already booked for the sunrise bike ride through a tour which will pick us at the Laihaina port. We will be in the Maui port 2 nights. The problem is that we have to be tendered (from the radiance of the sea) in and don't have a clear understanding if the tenders from Royal Caribbean's ship operate throughout the night to be able to be tendered in for a 230am tour departure time. We have 14 days prior to the 5/11 booked tour to cancel with full refund.

Cancel your bike tour. You will be glad you did. Rent a car and drive up during the day. See why the bike tours aren't reccommend for yourself!!

If you still want to go your choice of course. Cruise critic forums may have the answer you are looking for about the tenders.

It is a Royal Caribbean ship (radiance of the sea) . We will be in Lahaina port 2 nights , but have to be tendered in for the 230am pick up at the dock. This is not a Royal Caribbean booked tour. Royal Caribbean only does Hawaii as a repositioning cruise each year in May and September. Would really like someone who has done this Hawaiian Cruise with Royal with good knowledge of the tender situation at the Lahaina port to answer.

<<We are already booked for the sunrise bike ride through a tour which will pick us at the Laihaina port.>> Cancel it. No kidding. The fact that you have a reservation doesn't make the bike "ride" any safer.

I have been reading horror stories about the sunrise bike issue for years. Deaths, serious injuries, honeymoons and other trips ruined, issues about how the residents hate them, emergency room impact, people transported by helicopter to Honolulu for $$$$$.

Again, this is no joke. You're on a slippery road with sleep-deprived drivers - and inexperienced bikers. You're basically coasting. The roads are not designed for bikes, lacking guardrails and shoulders.

But if you think we're kidding you or over-reacting ... at the very least make sure that you have emergency medical transportation insurance.

You are going to a tremendous amount of trouble to put yourself at risk ... so very far from home.

Your question is extremely niche. Maybe someone on Cruise Critic will be able to help. This is not the best forum to ask such a specific question about a rare cruising case. I'd also call Royal to ask. Their customer service is pretty good. But since you didn't book the tour with them, they may not tender you out.

Please do some research and get good travel insurance including medical evacuation in case you are hurt or die during the bike ride down. It's a demanding ride down with switchbacks and hair pin turns. Someone did unfortunately die from his injuries last fall. Also the National Park Service banned the bike tour operators from starting inside the park boundaries after multiple people died.

My experience ... tenders will run all night. It might be just one, and you may have to wait. But people do all kinds of things on the Island that take them into the wee hours and out super early in the morning.

So contact Royal Caribbean directly for the final word. Not us or Cruise Critic.
