Day trip to Lanai by boat with dolphin watching

We are going to Maui in a few months.

I really wanted to do a day boat trip from Lahaina to Lanai with dolphin watching involved. I do not want to swim with the dolphins, I just want to watch them. I do not want to snorkel from the boat either.

I had seen a cruise that looked great that involved dolphin watching and where you could spend a few hours on Lanai but I read that the boat trips to Lanai can be rough so I am apprehensive to say the least.

Has anyone got any tips/advice?

Thank you in advance.

Just be aware that there is no guarantee of seeing dolphins. I have been to Lana'i twice with Trilogy, and saw no dolphins.

Boat trips to Lana'i can be rough in the late afternoon, for sure. Are you familiar with Dramamine, or Sea Bands? And ginger candy may help as well.

Hi JOan123. thank you for that.

I was hoping someone that had done one of these boat trips like yourself would reply.

I will heed your advice about the Dramamine.

What trip are you looking at? It matters, for many reasons.

An early trip that isn't all day will be best.

Take Bonine the night before and the morning of the trip.

I have gone to Lanai multiple times and I would say 95% of time I have seen dolphins. One time I did not is the same trip Joan was on.

When you take the medicine, take one the night before and one an hour before getting on the boat for it to be most effective.

I've gone to Lanai twice. Once with Trilogy and the other with Sail Maui. I saw dolphins both times. The return can be rough. Even with meds if I had that problem I'd skip it!!

if you are apprehensive about the trip you might reconsider.

No way of telling what the conditions will be the channel. It can get very rough very quickly or stay very calm all day

Been out there so many times, have lost track, dolphins are iffy at best no better thsn 50/50. They do like Lanai and I have seen them there and in the channel, but would not put out that kind of money with dolphin expectations.Been on dozens of diving trips to Lanai and never saw dolphins

I've have also seen them from the beach in south Maui, Lahaina and out at Molkini, La Perouse Bay

A pod will swim 50 miles a day, no telling where and when they might pop up.

We had a huge pod join us on a west Maui snorkel, rode the bow wave forever,

just nerver know where they will be at any given time

A sailing catamaran like Trilogy is apt to be a smoother ride than the raft you are considering.

Thank you all for your feedback.

The raft issue had me worried with seasickness.

Does anyone know if there any cruises on larger vessels like catamarans that include some time in Lanai where we might see dolphins as well?
