Fill in the holes in my itenarary Dallas to Moab July 2013

Please fill in the holes/ critique my itinerary. Thanks in advance!

Who: Avid cyclist husband, 2 girls (8 & 11), and myself

We are used to being in a car... we are from Texas! We do not like to sit around on vacation... like to experience what's unique to the area!

When: July 2013

* please advise here especially

6/28 Drive Dallas to Dumas (overnight Dumas)

6/29 Drive Dumas to Salida stop at sand dunes (Overnight Salida)

6/30 Salida Husband bike Monarch Crest Trail (Overnight Moab)

*activity for us while waiting

7/1 Red River Adventure Rafting 8:15-2:30 (Moab)

*Evening ride for husband

7/2 Canyoneering Red River 7:30-12 (Moab)

*Evening hike/visit to Canyonlands?

7/3 *Morning Bike ride husband

Fiery Furnace Ranger led hike 4pm

Red Rock Astronomy 9pm

7/4 Drive to Bryce Canyon NP Take 24 to 12?? (Overnight BC Lodge)

*Should arrive BCNP by 4pm. Activities for 3hours or so??

8pm special ranger presentation of Declaration of Independence

9pm Ranger stargazing program

7/5 ? Maybe drive to Page and stay at Lake Powell

7/6 Drive from Page (?) to Santa Fe

I know I want to overnight Santa Fe, NM (never been there)

7/7 Santa Fe to Dallas

Would love any advice to improve upon this! The end of the trip seems to fall apart. I'm totally open to anything after BCNP stargazing program and overnighting in Santa Fe 2 nights later!

Pretty good plan. Where is the canyoneering trip? For the evening hike, definitely do Delicate Arch in Arches - better alternative than Canyonlands for sunset. Given you interest in activities, you really should do the Little Wild Horse Canyon slot canyon near Goblin Valley. But to do that you need to break your Moab to Bryce with a night in Torrey, which is a better plan anyways. Your return via Santa Fe seems fine.

Have fun.

If you want to see any of Santa Fe I would plan 2 nights there. The drive from Page is a full day.

OM, I have major concerns here about your DH doing the Monarch Crest Trail without becoming acclimated to the altitude. This is a very high altitude ride. If you are doing the one I'm thinking of, that shuttles you from Salida to the top of Monarch Pass so that you can ride on down that is some serious bike riding, too. singletracks.com/bike-trails/monarch-crest-t…

It starts at 11,312 feet, a big change from Dallas. We always suggest that people spend a night somewhere in CO at a midpoint so they can get acclimatized. In your case, perhaps Colorado Springs. visitcos.com/colorado-springs/travel/high-al… webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/altitude-sickness-to…
