BLM tent sites for October trip

Planning a first-time visit for hiking around Moab late October. Is this a busy time of year for the area? Just wondering if, when arriving on Thursday, it will be difficult to find one of the non-reservable BLM sites in the area.

I'm travelling with my sister and we'll be tent camping. Ideally our site will be remote, rugged, beautiful with a view of some cool formation and/or the Colorado River. Looking for something with this, yet fairly accessible to town and, more importantly, Arches National Park. At a glance it looks like there are many, many good contenders. Any recommendations?

Also, what is the typical weather for late October (3rd week).

In the spring, campsites definitely fill up.You could call the BLM in Moab to ask about summer, which won't be as busy. I've put the BLM phone number below. The BLM website www.blm.gov tells of campsites further out that "almost never fill up."

If you arrive on Thursday in October you'll have a very reasonable chance of getting most campsites. Especially if you arrive earlier in the day. I know there are some camping spaces down the Potash Road, next to the Colorado River. Can't think of the specific names though.

Weather should be great. Days likely in the low 70's and cooling off at night to low 40s. Be prepared for cold weather in the evenings. The leaves also may be changing and it's a fantastic time to drive along the river corridor and snap photos of the cottonwood trees in brilliant yellow against the red rocks, snow in the La Sals, and deep blue sky.

This year, the third week of October and beginning on Thursday is UEA, in which all public Utah schools are out for the remainder of the weekend. That weekend will be a very busy in Moab as it is very popular for families to head out for one last vacation before winter sets in (we have done it the past two years ourselves). If you are looking for a campsite just be aware of that particular weekend (October 17-20). You may be safer going in on Wednesday the day before.

Late October weather can be very nice. Definitely plan on cool/cold nights so layers advisable. In general, you should be able to get sites along the Colorado River with a Thursday arrival. But don't underestimate the impact of UEA. There are sites along the Potash Road but more choices along 128 from Moab up to the Dewey Bridge - quite a few of them. The ideal way to look is from Moab east, that way you can check closer to town (and Arches) first. Another option is Sand Flats up around the Slickrock Trail.

Have fun.
