Hotel close to attractions and subway

Hi. I am comming to Boston for the first time in April. Would any of recommend a hotel close to the usual attractions and near the subway system. I was considering one of the Holiday Inn Hotels. Know nothing about the city just yet.

The Bullfinch Hotel has been getting good reviews here. The hotel's website is:

http://www.bulfinchhotel.com/

This would be a very convenient location.

Back Bay is also a good base to explore the city, but it would help to get an idea of what your budget is. Boston is such a walkable city you shouldn't have any problem getting around by foot and by using the "T."

Oh yes, that would be an excellent choice. I have heard lots of good things about this hotel too and think that you will enjoy staying there. It is in a good location and is a boutique-style hotel that has only been open about a year now. It is housed in a historic building dating back to 1900.

May I ask a question too? Does anyone know if this hotel is still a Clarion Collection? I think that it might just be called the Bulfinch now. Anyhow, I would highly recommend staying at the Bulfinch.

The previous posts are absolutely correct. The city is very compact, very walkable, and easily navigated by public transportation. Your hotel choice should be dictated by amenities desired and your budget. My one bit of advice would be to give less weight to hotels that emphasize their proximity to hospitals, because (with the exception of Mass General), most of the hospitals are a bit further away from the tourist interest areas than you may want. Also, while the hotels immediately on-site at Logan Airport are convenient to public transportation, take care when considering hotels that claim "proximity" to the airport and courtesy shuttles... and indication that they may be on major highways, and not very close to much else but the airport.

I just wanted to mention that the hotel is still a Clarion Collection at this time but was acquired about a month ago by Innkeepers USA. Please feel free to visit the hotel's webpage via the link provided below for more information.

An interesting tidbit-When the building that is now the Bulfinch was built in the early 1900's, its exterior was designed based on the Flatiron Building in NYC. As I mentioned in an earlier post, this building was completely restored and converted into a boutique hotel last year, which opened in December 2004.

You have mentioned that you are considering the Holiday Inn chain. The Holiday Inn at Government Center has been recommended by many posters in this forum in the past and it is affordable. It is also within walking distance of the subway system, (the "T"), the North End and Quincy Market.

Another choice close to both the subway and attractions would be the Long Wharf Marriot, which is next to the New England Aquarium, next to the North End and across from Quincy Market. Both the Blue Line (Aquarium) and Orange Line (State) stops are within easy access. Harbor Cruises right out the front door of the hotel as well as sightseeing trolleys.

Please note that April 17, 2006 is date of the Boston Marathon and all hotels are booked up way in advance around that time. The Holiday Inn, Government Center, (near Mass General Hospital) is also within walking distance of Charles Street, Beacon Hill restaurants.

I stayed in the Holiday Inn Gov't Centre last April and despite some reviews saying it was noisy I didn't find it so. The T is very close and it takes only a short time to walk to Quincy Market and the Waterfront ( and I'm not particularly a walker, but found it comfortable). You're also very close to Beacon Hill and Charles Street. It's a pleasant, if not hilly walk from the hotel over Beacon Hill bringing you to Boston Common. The rooms were large, comfortable and very affordable. My tip would be not to book your hotel on the Holiday Inn site but to check out one of the discount sites. I got my room at the Holiday Inn for $119 doing it this way. Take heed of the other posters suggestion though that in April it is the marathon, so book now if you can. Have fun.
