Fake/Counterfeit Goods in NYC

Is it illegal to purchase fake purses or rolex watches from street vendors or stores? I heard that a councilwoman was trying to pass a bill making it a misdeamenor to do so? Would you get arrested?

I don't know if the bill has passed yet, but it had broad support, last I checked. Whether it's a crime for you or not, you still shouldn't do it.

It should be noted that this only applies to counterfeit goods (i.e. the type displayed on sheets that disappear when the police appear or are stored in vans/warehouses in Chinatown). You will see vendors that sell scarves, hats, handbags that do not carry specific labels - those are fine to buy.
