Cajun food, music, dancing: New Orleans or Lafayette?

The last time I was in New Orleans was for an HP computer conference in 1992 which coincided with Hurricane Andrew so I didn't get to see much of what I wanted!

This time I'm flying in to meet daughter and family who are extensively touring the States and we have four full days in New Orleans, and then one full day and two part days in Lafayette, which I've not been to before.

I love everything cajun (rather than zydeco) and would appreciate general advice/pointers as to how best achieve this. Should we wait until we get to Lafayette or could we experience this in New Orleans? We will have a four and a two-year old in tow, so unfortunately looking probably for daytime stuff.

In New Orleans, Mulate’s, a very family friendly restaurant with Cajun music and dancing. The food may not meet foodie standards, but it can be fun with kids or out of towners. See:

For Cajun cuisine in New Orleans, K-Paul's Louisiana Kitchen, or Cochon.

Without the kids, day or night, Cajun music at the Tropical Isle Bayou Club on Bourbon Street.

I hear that it's all getting full of tourists, but:

BTW, if you don't like Zydeco, you don't like Cajun music!

Cafe des Amis is closed. However Breaux Bridge has other venues.
