Where’s the best...

Staying in the garden district this oct. (first timer) can anyone give me an opinion on who has the BEST oysters, biscuits & gravy, gumbo, grits, & po boy? We will be there for 4 days so i really want to include eating these things during our trip! Oh and the best pie? Or sweet thing? Thank you!!

You should consider staying in the French Quarter for your first visit.

IMO: Oysters at Felix's, I really enjoyed the Biscuits & Gravy and Grits at Daisy Dukes, I'm sure they are NOT the best but I really liked them (touristy), everything else on your list I'd go with COOPS! LOVE that place sooo much. Also just an FYI...we stumbled across a great bar in the Garden District on Magazine Street...The Bull Dog.

Parkways Bakery for Poboys, it’s in mid-city. Dookey Chase for creole, it’s in the Treme and Frenchmen Street for music. The best sweet thing I have ever eaten in my life is the Sweet Potato Doberge cake at Dickie Brennan’s Steakhouse (and I don’t like sweet potato)!

Out near where you are staying - definitely Superior Seafood for their Oyster Happy Hour, Domilise's for Po Boys - (or make the trip up to Parkway), Dick and Jenny's for Creole, check out Tipitina's for music it's right nearby. Gumbo head over to Feret St Beer Room - it is great IMO. I don't know if I have a "grits" spot that I can say is great - most places have it and its good - I just haven't explored having grits in the city. Same with Biscuits and Gravy. For interesting sweets - hit up Sucre on Magazine.

Blind Pelican on St Charles ave has 25 cent happy hour oysters. They are very good but I consider the raw oysters at Peche to be the best,, most things like gumbo, po boys, and such are subject to personal taste,, try the gumbo at SoBou on Chartres for happy hour

For biscuits and gravy, I'd probably go with Johnny's Po-Boy Restaurant in the French Quarter. The biscuits are made from scratch, rolled and cut; they make the breakfast sandwiches pretty special. It's way crowded from about 11 AM 'til 2 PM, but breakfast (opens 8 AM) is pretty doable.

For gumbo, if there is a consensus favorite (there isn't) it would be the Gumbo Ya Ya at Mr. B's Bistro. If you aren't up for a full upscale meal, you can get drinks and gumbo at the bar.

Alot of great places for all of those, but if you want near you in the Garden District, Surrey's has excellent breakfasts as does the Ruby Slipper on Magazine. Great po-boys can be found at Mahoney's
