Aurora borealis

Assuming clear skies at end of February beginning March, where is the best viewing point in or around Anchorage.

Well actually Anchorage isn't the best area . . . too many lights, and because it is close to the ocean, more gray/clouds than the Interior region of Alaska - so head to Fairbanks for better aurora viewing. :)

Drive 40 minutes north to Reflection Lake. Half way around the 1 mile loop trail is the viewing tower. I've watched the lights from there before.

If your trip is causing you to be in/near Anchorage, then AKStafford have you a great spot.

If you’re coming to AK for the purpose of northern lights, then Coalminer is right, ANC is the wrong place; get to Fairbanks.

Hi All thanks for replies. Iditarod is prime reason for visit. Thought aurora would be a bonus.

If you go to the "official" start of the Iditarod at Willow, maybe stay in Talkeetna, you will have the amount of ambient darkness needed. Of course, there is absolutely no guarantee that the lights will be "out" any particular night and it's often 2 or 3 AM when they are. We've had a couple of years of pretty frequent and vibrant displays but........it's a matter of luck on any given day!
