Birthday Weekend for 14 yr old

Planning a weekend trip with my other half & 14 year old son. Going to see concert at Century Link Center on first night. Looking for suggestions other than the zoo to fill the weekend. Suggestions of local favorites welcome. Don't want to break the bank either. We all feel like we have seen the Old Market, so what else is there?

Hi there ! Well my first thought is that when I was 14 I would have loved to visit the Strategic Air and Space museum in Ashland, NE just a short distance from Omaha on I-80. All manner of military aircraft and some rocketry are displayed indoors. Educational exhibits / movies.

Most 14 year olds would probably find things like the Joslyn Art museum and the Durham Western Heritage Museum boring, I know I would have then but I like them now.

Depending on when you are here - the Omaha Stormchasers AAA Minor league baseball team plays in Werner Park in the south burbs - really nice new park and a good time.

Creighton baseball season has started so you can see if there are any games at TD Ameritrade park.

Sempeck's is also a good spot for kids (go-karts, laser tag, bowling, video games), but is a bit of a drive from downtown as it is in Elkhorn, NE. Joe's Karting in Council Bluffs has very fast go-karts that would be very popular with 14 year old boy's but they do require a learning permit or driver's license. It's also a bit pricey.

There is also a movie theater in midtown called CineDine where you can eat dinner while watching a movie.

Lion King Broadway show is playing now at the Orpheum, but not sure that would be popular for teenage boys, but if you could take them into it, I am sure they would enjoy it. Would be pricey.

You did not specify the weekend, but the Husker Spring Game (scrimmage) is April 6th over in Lincoln. Tickets are only $10 so it's a great way to get into the stadium for cheap.

Sciencefest is April 12-14. http://www.nescifest.com/schedule/

Nebraska Renaissance festival is May 4th-5th & 11th-12th, 2013

The Lewis and Clarke Monument is a fun, free visit (although it will not take a lot of time) as well as crossing the Bob Kerrey pedestrian bridge between Omaha and Council Bluffs (the Omaha side is behind the Century Link Center).

Tour times are limited, but if you got the opportunity to take a tour of Joslyn Castle it would be worth it!

Also, As mentioned above, a fun movie experience is the Marcus Midtown Cinema which offers good food with your flick (for weekends/evenings you may want to call ahead or go online to get tickets early -- seating is assigned and the theaters do not seat as many people as traditional theaters do).

Other than a movie, you could also see what's playing at the Omaha Community Playhouse. They put on some really good shows. Check what's going on when you visit to see if it's of interest.

I asked my boys, and they seconded the suggestion for the S.A.C. Museum, and also suggested Lancer's hockey (www.lancers.com). I'm not sure why you don't want to visit the zoo, but my boys recommended it as well. I hope you guys have a good weekend.
