Car or no car

My family of three will be in Begur for two nights on July 8-10. We will be arriving in Girona on the AVE from Madrid, and spending several nights in Barcelona afterward. We cannot decide whether or not to rent a car during this time. The total price for a car from Girona Airport is about $60, and it's about double from the train station. The price to drop it off in Barcelona is no higher than returning it to Girona. We would like to hike a lot, visit historic sites, and see pleasant beach towns. Is the car worth the price, and would it be a genuine timesaver, particularly if we had to go to the airport? Does the ability to stop in towns on the way to Barcelona make it worth driving in the city itself? It looks like Begur and the surrounding beach towns are all walkable, but what about inland towns like Pals?

Rent a car for the costa brava. It is the best choice for exploring the area.

There is a bus that links Girona bus station (inside the train station) with Girona Airport. If I were you, I would drop it off at Girona train station, to not to deal with Barcelona Rondes. Apart you do not need a car in Barcelona, from Girona you can use the AVE or MD regional services (rodalies.gencat.cat) that is fast and easy.

The bus timetables are here (www.sagales.com)

Rent a car directly with the companies (Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Enterprise) and not with brokers, to avoid surprises. Enterprise usually is the cheapest company.

A car would be good. The municipality of Begur itself spreads over a hilly cape, with the town on top and the beaches at the bottom. It's lovely for hiking, but probably not so much fun if you have to do it regularly or with shopping. The car will give you access to the medieval villages inland around Pals and La Bisbal or out to Banyoles. There is a lot of different types of landscape and scenery in a relatively small area.

Car, without doubt.

To walk to the medieval village of Pals, from Begur it takes about 1.25 hours, Peratallada 2.5 hours, Castell Montgri 3.5 hours. You only have 2 days in Begur!
