5 Day August Houseboat trip from Wahweap

We have a 5 day trip in August out of Wahweap and have gotten a lot of great information from Connie and JFR - THANK YOU.

We have 4 adults and 4 kids (9-14 yo), have rented a 59' houseboat and are also bringing a power boat and two jetskis.

We like to be a little more remote and away from the crowds, and do some fishing. We understand that August is peak season, but can you recommend an area maybe farther north? Friendship Cove, Rock Creek? Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

James

James, the further up the lake you go, the more likely you will more solitude. The vast majority of visitors to Lake Powell from Wahweap, go no further than Padre Bay. Friendship Cove or Rock Creek would probably be good options. When you get to Padre Bay, send an advance party out ahead to scout for a beaching site.

Before you leave Wahweap, you should ask about where the hot spots are for fishing. You will probably have to go in hunt for the fish.

Connie's advice is spot-on. Friendship Cove could work, as there are spots for maybe a half dozen houseboats in there, but this may or may not qualify as "solitude" for you, since you would likely see (or possibly even be nearby) those boats, even if they are across the cove. Rock Creek has more inlets and nooks, and thus may have more opportunity for actual "solitude". But in any case, a scouting boat is a crucial tool to search for suitable sites, which will save considerable time and allow you to get a jump on the better spots before others grab them.

There are other possible suitable camping spots north of Padre Bay, including the mouth of West Canyon, Dungeon Canyon, and Balanced Rock Canyon. There are also several unnamed coves off the main channel that may not be huge, but are big enough for houseboat, and if you find one of those, you will be guaranteed solitude because other boats won't fit... You need to think ahead in evaluating what you want in a good campsite. If it's a beautiful wide beach, you likely won't have it to yourself for long. If you value the idea of sliding off the back of he boat into the lake, make sure you pick a spot that is deep off the stern (back end), which typically correlates to steeper and smaller beaches... the best indicator of depth under and behind and anchored boat is the gradient onshore...the steeper, the deeper...
