We are going to Santa Fe the third week in August. How important is it to have air conditioning?
Most places don't have AC, but with the strange weather patterns, who knows if you will need it. It does get hot during the day but at night the temperatures drop down and usually opening the windows is enough. We rarely run our AC in the evenings/night. Most places have swamp coolers instead of central air.
You'll be fine. As mentioned above, most of us who live here don't have AC. In August, there should be some afternoon monsoon rains to bring cooler air in the later part of the day. Most tourist are out and about in the afternoon anyway. Evenings are fine.
Thank you for your quick replies to my question. They are helpful and we will not make a rental with A/C a priority.
We are used to cool and having moving air when we sleep. Without it we sleep poorly and restless. Without at least a fan to use it can be uncomfortable...especially if the rooms you are staying in face the afternoon sun...they heat up.
We have had great success with VRBO's Cielo Grande condos. All the units are reasonably priced and have AC...as well as kitchenettes and private in-unit washer/dryer. They are very well located and have private off-road parking.
