November Santa Fe/Taos/Carlsbad Itinerary Help

Hi all,

We're considering a last minute trip to Carlsbad Caverns Santa Fe and Taos. This would be our first trip to New Mexico. Do you think it's advisable on a one week trip to do these three? We are nature lovers and in Santa Fe we'd probably mainly see the Pueblos, Bandalier Monument and Georgia O'Keefe Museum. In Taos, we'd love to explore a few similar sights. I guess November is not ideal for many destinations in terms of blooming flowers etc., so we thought of November for caves and pueblos. Are the surrounding areas of Santa Fe, Taos and Carlsbad likely to show good fall foliage colors or any wildflowers in mid to late November? Thanks for any help you can provide.

By November most flowers here in Santa Fe will be gone, as well as fall leaves. Still a beautiful time, very quiet. You may still be able to hike some of the trails up toward the ski basin.

Some other places you really need to see in Santa Fe include the NM History Museum/Palace of the Governors and the Indian Art and Culture Museum. Also consider Pecos Nat Mon east of Santa Fe.

While in Taos, see the Martinez Hacienda and Rio Grande Gorge Bridge as well as Taos Pueblo.

Does your 1 week include weekends? If so... this may work. Check with Southwest Airlines, they do not have their fares on the large travel websites.

Day 1 Sat - Arrive Albq. Stay in Santa Fe

Day 2 Sun - Santa Fe all day

Day 3 Mon - Bandelier Nat Mon. Also visit Puye Cliff Dwellings, Santa Clara Pueblo and Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo (San Juan) on your way to Taos (take the low road) or stay in Espanola. A few casinos in the area have hotels.

Day 4 Tue - Taos and Taos Pueblo

Day 5 Wed - Back to Santa Fe via the high road. Stopping in Chimayo for lunch and shopping for beautiful rugs. Stay in Santa Fe.

Day 6 Thu- Drive to Carlsbad (4-5 hours). Possibly seeing Pecos Nat Mon prior to leaving the Santa Fe area. Also a nice place in Carlsbad, the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park.

Day 7 Fri- Carlsbad Caverns. Walk in the Natural Entrance if you can and also try to get a tour to Kings Palace.

Day 8 Sat- To White Sands Nat Mon and on to Las Cruces/Mesilla for the night. La Posta Restaurant is awesome. Also check out Stahmann's Pecan Farm

Day 9 Sun - Depart El Paso
