Day trip from Santa Fe in April?

In town with 2 teenage girls for 5 days. Can you recommend a day trip from Santa Fe (other than Taos & Bandalier Nat'l Monument)?

Also, while you're at it - if you have recommendations for specific activities and/or shops/venues in town that would be appreciated as well.

Take those girls to Doodlets, an inexpensive and really fun shop with all the goofy toys and what-not that they'll enjoy. Then walk up to Keshi and pick up some Zuni fetishes, a good gift for teens who are finding their way in the world and can use a spirit guide. The gift shops at the Folk Art Museum and the Wheelwright are both terrific, and the Wheelwright has a wonderful exhibit right now of paintings from the Santa Fe Indian School, easy to view, small museum doesn't take long. If you think they are into learning, drive up to Los Alamos and visit the Bradbury Science museum, it sounds dry, but it is actually pretty interesting and the drive up (similar route to Bandelier) is gorgeous. You could also reserve a hike at the Valles Caldera, see at www.vallescaldera.gov. It is glorious country and never over-run by hikers since access is controlled - pack a picnic lunch from Whole Foods and you are good to go....have fun!

I was going to recommend Taos, but if that's out, then I would recommend you spend a day here in Albuquerque.

Travel down the "backroad" between Santa Fe, and Albuquerque, on the "Turquoise Trail." NM-14. Stop in the old mining town of Madrid (Mad-rid...don't ask me why..see the movie "Wild Hogs" with Tim Allen). Little Madrid has three blocks of quirky arts and crafts shops. Fun shopping.

Arriving in Albuquerque, you may all enjoy the world's longest tramway ride to the top of Sandia Peak, at just under 11,000ft. You can see for 100 miles on a clear day, which are the usual in April.

Then, Old Town, with it's many diverse shops (check out the Christmas Shop behind the old church. It has thousands of decorative items from all over the world. Restaurants?: The Church Cafe (also behind the church), or Little Anitas at Rio Grande Blvd. & Mountain Road (the NW entrance into Old Town.)

There are several museums on Mountain Road including the Albuquerque Museum of History and Art, which provides a very good look into the ancient history of the area through Anasazi, Pueblo, Spanish, Mexican, and American times.

The Natural History Museum across the street has excellent dinosaur displays, with many hand's on features. Off Alameda Blvd. in Northern Albuquerque, you may want to tour the new, Albuquerque Balloon Museum. It is adjacent to the Balloon Fiesta launch field, so you can take a look at that also.

All of these would make for a very full day. Whatever you decide to do, enjoy your visit to our state.

A nice drive up to Abiquiu and possibly a tour of Georgia O'keeffe's home and studio would combine both some incredible scenic beauty but also show them what a strong, independent woman is capable of.

An added sidetrip in that area is the spa and mineral baths at Ojo Caliente.

If they like the outdoors and hiking in smaller doses before the dreaded teenager boredom kicks in, Tent Rocks National Monument just south of Santa Fe is amazingly unique and beautiful without eating up a whole day.

I have a 16 yo daughter, and here are some trips she likes:

Cerrillos/Madrid. South of Santa Fe on "Turquoise Trail" Rt. 14. Cerrillos is an old mining town that is almost a ghost town but it has a funky shop/petting zoo/museum that sells small rocks,, jewelry and trinkets that are fun. Cerrillos also has riding so if your girls might like a nice easy trail ride, check out Broken Saddle riding. Then, a few more miles south is Madrid, a fun gallery/clothing store town.

North, try Chimayo. The Santuario is special, as are a few small shops. Do lunch at Rancho de Chimayo, a great treat.

In town, my daughter likes Warehouse 21, a local city sponsored teen center that welcomes outsiders, the Plaza and Cathedral Park where teens also hang out, Loretto Chapel Staircase, the evening Ghost Tour of Santa Fe, and yes, the Folk ARt Museum on Museum Hill.

Some good restaurants for teens are Coyote Cafe Rooftop, Upper Crust Pizza and Tomasitas.

Enjoy!

If you like to hike and visit nature, head to Tent Rocks Nat Mon. Short 1/2 mile hike to a slot canyon, fun for the teens we took there this weekend. Also a longer, steeper climb to an overlook. blm.gov/nm/…kasha_katuwe_tent_rocks.html .

Another place to visit is Pecos Nat Mon east of Santa Fe.

Some additional shopping places include Jackalope for fun imports etc, the Railyard/Sanbusco area has interesting shops as well as dining options. You all may enjoy dining at Zia Diner, Cowgirl, Railyard Restaurant..

If pizza is needed, try Pizza Etc, Upper Crust, Rooftop Pizzeria, Il Vicino, Pizza Espiritu.

Have a great trip.
