Arriving on cruise ship

We will be in Newport in October on a cruise ship. Any ideas for things to do for the day?

Places to get good local food for lunch?

Thank you!!

It was our experience in watching the cruise ships come and go, that once you disembark the ship and a short drive they drop you off right in the middle of town on Thames. This puts you in the heart of everything as far as food, shopping. The only thing, and you would have check with your cruise director, is a tour of the mansions. As most ships we noticed came in the morning and left in the evening. The mansions would be a short drive to them, they are time consuming. There is also Ft. Adams, but there again it's on the other side where the ship anchors.

The town it's self is walkable, with lots to see and do and their is a place(cant remember name) where you can rent bikes, scooters, etc. There is lots to see and do but with limited ashore, a means of getting to them may keep you in town.

As far as a place to eat, if you like lobster or "lob-sta" as pronounced, try the Crab shack over by the Windom hotel. It's a small place looks like a shack but good food at good prices, and it has seats outside to overlook the bay. Fresh catch local everything. For lunch we enjoyed the Red Parrot, right on Thames other side of the street from wharf

In the previous post from me, concerning "crab shack". The name is "lobster shack" , not crab shack. Getting to old I guess......

Newport is a great place to visit in October. There are generally offerings by the cruise lines to tour a mansion or two so check out your ships destination tours online.

This is a tender port so you will actually "land" at Perrotti Park which is just off Thames Street. From that point you can walk to a lot of shops and restaurants. Are you looking for fish? Lobster bisque is terrific at Brick Alley pub which is a very short walk from your tender docking area. You can also walk to the Newport Lobster truck depending on what you date is in October. Take a look at them online. There are also many other restaurants on Thames Street. Are you looking for dinner or lunch?

There is a local boat shuttle that departs every hour from Perrotti Park. This shuttle goes all over the harbor including Fort Adams which is great for a tour on a nice day in October. If you have a tour that includes a mansion and Ocean Drive and Cliff Walk that would be great.

I agree with Emily. I think it's well worth taking a guided tour. They not only take you down Ocean Drive but they can tell you who owns what and the back stories on lots of things. They take you to a mansion or two. If I had a choice I'd only tour one. Walk part of Cliff Walk and spend the rest of the day in the wharf area.
