Where to stay for a night or two in Vicksburg?

I am planning on spending a night or two in Vicksburg in early March. I prefer to stay downtown, within walking distance to restaurants and nightlife. More interested in hanging out with the locals and experiencing the local scene. Not interested in casinos. I generally stay in 3 star properties.

What area/neighborhood should I be looking in? Is this a safe idea?

Thank you

Most of hotels are not downtown but near Civil War site.

There is not a whole lot of that, but your best bet may be the historic Washington street area. There are some nice B&Be& inns ... location wise look at Cedar Grove and the Corners. Both very nice, full of history, Cedar Grove somewhat larger, more amenities.

Yeah, a lot of the hotels and stuff are closer around the military park or the casinos. If I had my choice of places to stay in V'burg (and I don't because I always just stay with family, lol!), I would choose one of the B&Bs as mentioned above. I worked a summer at Cedar Grove and it's beautiful and definitely worth staying in (heck, their "chapel" used to be the church my grandparents went to) but you won't be within easy walking distance of the downtown shops or restaurants though it's a short drive down Washington St.

You could also look into Anchuca.
