Dinner options in park lodges?

Hi ---

We are visiting Yellowstone in a couple of weeks and staying in the Canyon Lodge. Would like to have a nicer dinner than can be had in the Canyon Lodge Cafeteria, and are thinking about either the Lake Yellowstone Hotel Dining Room or the Obsidian Dining Room at Old Faithful Snow Lodge. (Assuming that the reservation gods smile upon us!)

Question: what's it going to be like driving back to Canyon Lodge after a later dinner at one of those locations? Is it a challenging or harrowing drive after dark, after dinner? Are there other transportation options--hotel shuttles, car services? We don't to have a lovely evening spoiled by a white-knuckle two-lane-twisty-road drive back to our hotel.

Appreciate any insights on this and on better dining options in the park!

--- mike

Don't do a late dinner. You want to be at your lodging before dark because of the wildlife. Make an early reservation for Lake Hotel, it is closer, and then watch for wildlife in the evening on the way back to Canyon.

The Obsidian dining room is FCFS, no reservations. The M66 Grill is at Canyon and reservations are required.

Dining in Yellowstone is not the feature. It would be very dark, 2 lane winding roads with the good possibility of large mammals on the road! I wouldn't even try it. There are no shuttles, car service etc, this is a wilderness. The food at either place will not be that great to warrant the risk of hitting a large mammal. Have a nice, early dinner at Lake and drive back to Canyon in the daylight. Or have a later burger type meal at Canyon and do the ranger campfire at the campground!

Will you be visiting Grand Teton/Jackson? Much better dining options in Jackson.

Thanks for the insights--"large mammals" hadn't made my list of hazards! Canyon Lodge dining it is.

I love dining at Lake Yellowstone but we go fairly early so that we can be in Hayden Valley at dusk for wildlife watching. Lake is the best food in the Park and is an easy drive in the light from Canyon. If you don’t mind a 6:30 dinner, it’s really lovely

What zackdog said in #4.

Early dinner at Lake and the a drive (before dark) through the Hayden valley back to Canyon. Fabulous!

Honestly, I just came back from a 5/26-6/5 trip - it didn't get completely dark in the park until well past 9 PM. Depending on how early your dinner reservation is (we did a 6:45 at Lake), you should be completely fine!

"Make an early reservation for Lake Hotel, it is closer, and then watch for wildlife in the evening on the way back to Canyon." I will edit this to say, if you are planning a nicer dinner with wine/adult beverages, have a DD or stick with Canyon and don't drive. Alcohol and altitude can have more of an effect than you realize.
