Geysers

We have never been to the West and are excited about our trip! We are staying in Jackson Hole for three nights and then heading to Gardiner to stay for two nights. We were wanting to see the geysers on the way to Gardiner, which ones are easily to be seen and how much time do you think we will need to allot? Thanks so much for any advise!

Here's a current thread that may be helpful -

https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60999…

You'll be driving past the geyser basins on your route from Jackson Hole to Gardiner. Stop at as many of the geyser basins that interest you. Get an early start and do them all!

Here's a map -

https:/…YELL_Tear-Off_Map2016.pdf

You'll be entering via the south gate. Turn left at West Thumb Geyser Basin and explore all along the western side of the Grand Loop Rd. If you don't finish, come back down after your first Gardiner night.

If you want to see the big, predictable geysers, most of those are in the Upper Geyser Basin. This has been a fantastic year for the big, unpredictable ones: Steamboat, Giant and Fan & Mortar have all gone within 5 days! Most short trips don't leave time to sit and wait for a few hour prediction window, but you may get lucky and get a nice grouping. Riverside, Castle, Daisy, Beehive, Grand are all worthwhile ones if you catch them. Fountain is fantastic, in Fountain Paint Pots (also just a great thermal area) and Great Fountain is on Firehole Lake Drive. There are other smaller, not predicted geyser, as well as unpredictable ones that you may be fortunate to see, in the upper basin and the other smaller basins. They can also be quite fun to watch! Do check out Anemome on geyser hill in the upper basin.

For predictions, the NPS has them, as well as geysertimes.org. Geysertimes predicts more than NPS, and does not stop when the VC closes. https://geysertimes.org/predictions.php I believe they both have phone apps as well. You want to check predictions while you have service, or you can check at the visitor center at OF for them on your arrival.

Steamboat is in Norris- it went again at 1 a.m. today!! Parking there is tough.

Know you won't see it all, so enjoy what you can see.

There is construction on the Norris/Mammoth road, possible 30 minute delays. Keep your eyes open for wildlife, even in the construction area!

Are you going to Cody via Canyon/East gate or the northeast gate?

If you have Verizon, maybe.

If you don't have Verizon, most likely "no".

OK, good, you can do the Canyon area on the way through. There is construction with delays on the Norriis/Mammoth road and the east entrance road. No better place to wait on a pilot car! Keep an eye out for wildlife at all times. Ask any more questions, and have a great trip. We love trip reports!
