Old Faithful Inn for entire trip?

We are a couple in our early 60's and are planning our first trip to YNP next September.

Would it be logical for us to stay the entire stay (approx 5-7 days) at OFI and day trip out of there or stay there a few nights and move to a location on other side of park? Just don't want to spend all our time driving back and forth, want to maximize our time seeing the sights.

Any suggestions would be helpful!!! Thanks,

Old Faithful is in the southern part of the park. If you want to cut down on the driving every day, stay at a location at the northern side (Mammoth or Roosevelt) or just outside of the park in Gardiner or Cooke City. It's a very big park that requires a lot of driving. Using a southern location as a base for that many days increases your drive time significantly.

Meant to say, split your time between the Old Faithful (or another southern area) with time in the northern part of the park.

Look at Mammoth or Canyon area and split with OF. Roosevelt closes early September.

We stay 1 night in Cooke city (arrived Bozeman before 11am) trough Gardiner, Mammoth Hotspring, Lamar Valley (arrived Cooke city Around 3Pm). 2nd night stayed Canyon Lodge ( LAMAR Valley, Roosevelt Lodge, Tower Fall, Lower Fall, Yellowstone Lodge & bridge). 3rd & 4th day stayed OF Cabin explored all basins (Lucky we saw Steamboat Geyer Eruption 9:04 am June 4) including West Thumb.Depend on which airport arrive and departure you can arrange lodges

After 2 nights in OF, we stayed 2 nights in Jackson Hole near Grand Teton for 2 more nights and departure Jackson Hole.

Thanks for all the info!

Are there posts somewhere with suggested 7 day inteneraries? Starting at SLC and heading either to GTNP working northward or go NE area and work back finishing up at GTNP and on to SLC.

There are others routes, but your flight times matter. It is easier to give more specific itineraries if you want that once there are more details.

You can really do it in any order. Here's one option -

Day 1 - Fly into SLC. Spend the night between SLC and the parks (depending on your arrival time)

Day 2 - Drive to West Yellowstone OR Jackson. If it's a West Yellowstone start -

Spend the first day doing the upper loop.

Day 3 - Spend the next day doing the lower loop.

Day 4 - Spend the 3rd day in Yellowstone returning back to see whatever you may have missed or want to see/do more of. Drive down into Jackson Hole

Night 4 - Lodging in GTNP or the town of Jackson

Day 5 - Explore Jackson Hole / GTNP / Jackson

Day 6 - Explore Jackson Hole

Day 7 - return to SLC for flight out.

If you want to reverse that, drive from SLC to Jackson then start with GTNP and then move up north to YNP. Exit out of the west gate to return to SLC.

Thanks for all the info! We trying to decide between Canyon lodging vs Mammoth lodging to cover the northern/eastern part of park along with a possible day trip over Beartooth pass/Red Lodge.

Is there an advantage to either location?

We are staying at OFI to cover southern part.

Mammoth is slightly closer to the north east entrance and access to Beartooth Highway. See link below for mileage and estimated times.
