Best Time to Visit Grand Prismatic Spring

Hi! My familiy is planning to visit Grand Prismatic Spring on our next visit to Yellowstone (mid July). We are planning first to walk around the boardwalk, and then drive to the next stop and walk the Fairy Falls Trail and climbing up the hill. We were told it's a short 15 minute walk on the trail and then a 4 minute easy climb up the hill on a social trail (second social trail because first trail is longer and steeper). Is this correct? We were also told that at some times of day the steam does not allow to view the spring at its best. At what time of day would you recommend us to visit this area? Thank you very much.

We visited grand prismatic twice (doing the hill climb) when we were there mid June - first time was about 5pm, and the colours were very muted and underwhelming. Went back the next day at noon when it was hot and sunny and colours were gorgeous. So i suggest you go probably around 12 or 1 when it's nice and sunny.

I didn't know there were two social trials. We did the one where it was about maybe half a mile or so (I'm bad at distances) walk along the start of the fairy falls trail and the trail up the 'grand prismatic hill' was very obvious. In fact it almost looked like a proper trail to us! It wasn't an easy climb. We had proper shoes and stuff but still it was steep and slidey and lots of fallen trees and branches in the way. was worth it for the view, though. And while up there, we also saw a couple making their way up the hill with their 4 or 5 year old child. Must have been difficult for that poor kid!

LOL. Whoever told you that owes you a dinner.

jabberwocky comes a lot closer: "It wasn't an easy climb. We had proper shoes and stuff but still it was steep and slidey and lots of fallen trees and branches in the way." And they weren't on the worst or even the average parts of the hillside.

See the thread in this forum about "the famous hillside above Fairy Falls Trail." That area is closed and it is illegal to go up there. Don't take a chance of getting in trouble or losing an ankle -- it will ruin your vacation for nothing.

ENJOY!

Obviously a lot of people don't think ILLEGAL and CLOSED applies to them. I do wish the park service had enough rangers to be out there issuing tickets.

Nana3x, it wasn't closed when we were there. No signs or anything. If there were signs we wouldn't have gone up. As it was, there were people going up and down whilst we were up there.
