Camping near Yosemite at the Dimond O CG, in Stanlslaus NF

Hi, I will be camping at the Diamond O, Camp Ground, in the Stanlslaus Ntnl. Forest near Yosemite in mid-June. Any opinions of the campground would be appreciated. Also, are there any great hikes or places of interests in the area? Lastly, how long of a drive will I have to the Yosemite Valley and other attractions in that vicinity.

Thanks,

I haven't stayed there, but it's in a nice location to access Hetch Hetchy. The hike to Wapama Fall flowing into the reservoir is nice, tho' the bridge across the creek isn't yet repaired.

You'll be about 45 minutes from Yosemite Valley. If Tioga Road is open, you'll be well located to access the high country. Perhaps the road will be open far enough that you can do the May Lake hike or continue up to Mt Hoffman. You'll definitely be able to hike into Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias.

It's a bit further to Glacier Point, probably at least 1.5 hours.

Here is the Park map: http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/upload/YOSEpark2003.pdf You can see the tent symbol on Evergreen Road just outside the Big Oak Flat Entrance; I think that's Dimond O.

I put "Dimond O" in the forum Search In bar and found a relevant conversation from 2008: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g61000-i315-k1990245-Diamond_O_outside_the_park-Yosemite_National_Park_California.html Hopefully the bear boxes have been replaced or repaired.

Dimond 0 Campgrounds is nicely treed and very close to Evergreen Lodge if you are planning an evening of non-camp foods they have a great restaurant. There is a great hike off the road, right at the first bridge after you turn off Highway 120. You can access Clavey Falls.

Have a super trip.

it's a fine campground. The river will put you to sleep and it is quiet, but it is a drive to Yosemite, down hill all the way to the valley. If you plan on hiking, biking or exerting yourself as I did, the drive is tiring. If this is your first time, as you drive into the valley prepare to be blown completely away! Watch out for the cars pulling off the main road for pics. I would advise you to bring bikes as you can see much more and still go on many incredible hikes. I was amazed at the lack of people hiking on off road trails. There are may paved trails full of people, if possible avoid at all cost. They do have busses to take you from one end of the valley to the next, but once again they are packed. Most campers leave Dimond O early for Yosemite, and so should you. Enjoy!
