We are staying in Koutouloufari would you say Malia is worth a visit in the day, how long on the bus please?
I'd say it's worth a visit,Malia has a good beach although it can be a little bit loud once the younger ones turn their music up and it also has some nice shops to browse in the Old Town area which is at the top of the strip road.
It's worth it just to see what all the fuss is about, the bus journey is about 15 minutes.
I was about to ask the same question...
It's worth it, if only to make you realise that you made the right decision not to stay there ;-). Seriously, I agree that the old town is quite nice and I stayed there once myself many years ago. I didn't like the strip when I was young and it hasn't got any more appealing to me now that I'm older, but there is more to Malia than the strip. You could visit the ruins at Malia Palace, which is just outside Malia, at the same time.
Most of the bars and clubs on the strip will be closed or fairly empty during the day. Many places don't get going till 11pm or later. However, there is more to Malia than the strip, as described above.
Buses run very late in high season so you could go in the evening and get a bus back to Hersonissos at 0100 or maybe even 0200 - of course there are no buses to Koutouloufari at all, only along the old highway through Hersonissos.
The Strip at 0200 in August:
