Semporna/Sipadan safety

Hi,

Travelling here In July with my partner to do some diving and just a bit concerned about the safety in this region. We were planning on staying in Semporna and head out to dive from here. Can anyone shed any light on the situation/recent experiences? Just a bit concerned, we are leaving our two little girls at home!

Thanks

This has been covered in detail recently, in a number of threads, here for example:

https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g230…

The safety situation in Semporna Islands is the same, albeit the Semporna islands are a lot closer to Jolo, and have had many more incidents than over near Sandakan.

There is a dusk to dawn curfew, so you will be transfered there and back in the daytime, i.e. no night dives,

your insurance would be invalid as per your government travel advice to reconsider your need to travel.

As for the real world, its pretty safe on tourist islands, ESSCOM / Army / PGA are stationed at most, if not all, resorts, and all have boat communication, bookings are down from Western tourists, and up 65%+ from Asian tourists, so the islands are full of Chinese, some "reef aware" and others not :)

I had been there last year 2016 for 2 weeks for holidays at Semporna , Bohedulang Island ,Mataking Island ,Mabul Island..well..its safe condition. Most island i have been visit..its secure by Army Camp..example Sibuan Island ,Matabuan Island ,Mataking Island and Sipadan Island. For Mabul Island,PGA camp based available here. Its safe for traveling here. PGA are patrol at all time afternoon and night.

Lots foreigner tourist are traveling here for diving at Sipadan island. Most of them are staying at Mabul island. Some of them are staying at Semporna. Doing days trips for snorkeling and diving.

During Holidays at China ,most Chinese mainland among main tourist compare other people visiting . Most of them will stay 4-6 night .

This Sunday I`ve just returned from there. I was there with my 5 years old child. I visted all the "not safe" places as Selingan island (turtle island) in Sandakan and Semporna with Mabul, Kapalai, Sibuan and Sipadan. All these places are full of tourist and full of army/police/ESSCOM that are checking the islands and waters during the day and night. On Selingan and Mabul island (where mostly of the tourist sleep) the police/army are present all the time. They are present also on the sea (when we did the dive on Kapalai, there was one army boat). On Sibuan they were also on the island. So, regarding the safety...I can say that is really safe and protected. I don`t know regarding your insurance... my insurance confirmed me that is valid also in these places. So, my suggestion is check with your insurance and go there and enjoy. The dives are great! I was also afraid before going (especially because of the child) but there I saw that the places are protected and that I don`t have any reason to worry.

Lately there was report of rebels being caught there so should take all safety precaution as the rebels might be out for revenge and might take some hostage for exchange for their buddy.

Not safe - check the recent report ;

thestar.com.my/news/…

ASG were planning a mass kidnapping, starting from Jolo, and then Selingan (Turtle Island), and Lankayan.

Well, Katja1204, you were very lucky, considering Turtle Island was their target at Easter Weekend.

For you to say that its safe after this report is worrying.

I just wrote how I was feeling when I was there. I was on Turtle island on the 23 of March and there were no problems and the police and army were present all the time. The recent news are from 18 of April. Of course after reading this report I would change my plans regarding Turtle island.

Miraloguay - i dont think 8.7 million people living in London, + 2.5 million tourists per month compares even slightly to the few thousand tourists per month on Sabah east coast islands. I think the odds are a little higher in Sabah islands. That is a stupid comparison.

Would you consider Sandakan/Sepilok and Kinabatangan River safe considering recent developments?
