More questions! Taxis/drivers and running

Hi All,

I want to thank you again for all of your help in January. We were turned down for our grant March, reapplied, and found out today it was approved. So now I need to see if I can plan this trip in the three weeks between now and Calabash.

My big question is how difficult it is to get taxis and/or drivers. Lodging is really tight during our visit. It looks like there are a few places we could still get, but they seem pretty far to walk to Jake's for the festival, or really they seem pretty far to walk home at night since the events end late. Is it relatively easy for us to book taxis or drivers to take us to and from the festival? If so, would we need to do this in advance, or could we manage it the day of?

Also, and this is much less important--I'm running a half marathon a few days after we get back, and I'm nervous about taking a week off from training. Are the roads safe to run on? (Mostly I'm concerned with shoulders and space to get out of the way of cars, though I do worry a bit about being a woman running alone.) Thanks again!

Yes the roads are safe to run on. No shoulder really, but very little traffic also.

I can't see getting drivers during Calabash being an issue.

Eh... I don't know. We've had trouble finding drivers there during normal times. Personally, I'd just get a scooter from Smurfs for like $25-30/day and have your own transport for your stay. It opens up so much more in the area. But, short of that, I'd just ask around when you get there and find someone you're comfortable with to be able to call when needed.

I agree with Timmmaay. A scooter is the way to go in TB! Unless you're planning to be drunk of course :) We rode all over on that scooter, visited several beaches and even rode to Lover's Leap. And if you get one, be sure to check the lights before leaving with the scooter. Our headlight was very dim and we didn't know it until we were en route to the sports park for a football game. It was great that the locals were so helpful - telling us that our headlight was out (it wasn't really out, just not nearly bright enough) and one of them rode along side us to Smurf's to help get it fixed.

We rarely saw route taxis, so finding a driver to call would be a good idea.

Roads in the area are perfect for running. Not a lot of traffic and no fast drivers.

Writing about TB is making me jealous and I need to go back!

Route taxis aren't a great option in TB unless you like long waits, but I've never had trouble getting a driver, via Treasure Tours or wherever I am staying. Maybe during Calabash they're all booked, but IMO that should bring more to the area. Why not call Jake's and see what they can arrange?

That said, renting a car or scooter can work very well. I've done both and the ability to come and go as you please is nice.

How far out are you going to stay?

You should also ask the owner/manager wherever you're staying. We've stayed at more than one place where they could arrange an independent driver at your request--much less formal than a full-on Treasure Tours van, more like throwing someone a $20 and piling in.

Hi All--thank you for the great responses. After I posted this I was lucky enough to manage a place in Marblue, so I think we should be fine with walking!

I also reached out to Treasure Tours about transport to and from Treasure Beach due to all of the great recommendations on this board. I still have a little planning to do for our brief sojourn in Kingston after Calabash. but we're in a great place right now.

Again, I so appreciate your responses here and all of the information you've shared on the board. I'm so excited to share this experience with my students!

Fantastic! Marblue is an easy walk to Jake's, and a lovely place to stay, I've stayed there 3x. Let us know how it all goes :)
