Snorkelling at or near Alvor?

Yet another question......so much help on last 2.....thanks.

I really enjoy snorkelling from the beach (as against boat trips).

I understand that,as it is the Atlantic the waves will prevent snorkelling in some places.....but does anyone know if a) there are any safe spots around Alvor and b) will a shortie wet suit be sufficient?

Thanks again

The breakwater area may provide you with some marine life but it is busy with boats , otherwise go east towards the Praia da day area where the first of the rocky coves start.

All the locals , spearfisherman etc wear wetsuits.

It depends where you are staying, if at the eastern end of Alvor where the main hotels are located possibly..

The hotels are not near the river but alongside the beach probably 20 mins walk to the eastern end of Alvor beach to reach the first of the coves.

Hi David S , nice one , I too enjoy a spot of snorkelling and also surfing , unfortunately the beach at Alvor does not have any coral reefs to offer but if ,like me , you're happy just to potter around looking at rocks and stuff then you should be happy . I personally would avoid the river entrance , not only as TERRY R points out is it busy with boats but there are some pretty strong rips around the end of the breakwaters . Your hotel is situated just off the fantastic boardwalk , so turn left heading toward the eastern end of thebeach where you'll find some coves which should give you a good paddle around . Once again check your sea conditions as the swells tend to go in all directions around the rocks especially at high tide . Enjoy Alvor and its beach .

Thank you (everyone).

So.....turning left, roughly how long a walk before the first cove?

Done lots of scuba diving.....now, like you say, am content to potter around.
