We are staying at Park Royal Club Cala in Humacao and plan to rent a car at the airport. Is a Jeep or SUV preferred. Does anyone have any advice for car rental?
When you say Jeep or SUV, what are you planing to do?
PR is a modern country with paved roads and expressways.
I don't think you will be doing off roading.
We have never rented a 4x4 in on the main island and you will not need one. The roads are paved with asphalt and the island has modern limited access toll highways. Rental cars are affordable in PR and many people on this forum have had a good experience with Charlie's Rental cars. I have had a good experience with Enterprise.Edited: 23 March 2013, 01:01
A Jeep or SUV is not really necessary. Bring a copy of your insurance papers - the declaration pages not just the card, as many rental agencies require you to take their expensive CDW without them. Avoid the discount agencies as many get very bad reviews on this forum. If you are considering an agency, search for it in this forum before you commit. Avis and Charlies (a local firm) consistently get good reviews. Make sure you get the "Easy Pass" option - it is automatic with most agencies. Check websites for charges, but the card is critical as many toll roads do not have any cash lanes.
I used Enterprise, they aight, just dont let them screw you with other insurances.
Thank you all for the helpful information.
Have most people had good experiences with Charlie's Rental Car...is it an issue getting from the airport to their offices which are not at the airport.
Just got back from Puerto Rico. We stayed in Humucao and also rented a car at Budget at the airport. We had a smaller SUV for our group of 5, which was great to get us everywhere we wanted to go (surfing, rainforest, beaches). If you have discounts through AAA, Costco or other programs, they are accepted there too.
Agree with others, no need to spend extra for SUV, jeep, etc. We've used both Enterprise and Charlies and had no problem with either one. Others say great things about Avis, but I always found their prices to be too high.
